Am going on a firearm hunt over bait in the late summer and have told to be ready to deal with a lot mosquitoes.

Any suggestions on how to protect my head and hands? Is there some gear available that really works?

Advice welcome.

colorado bob recently posted a thread in the Alaska forum about a similar scenario. Might get in touch with him.

Thermocell works to keep the mosquitoes at bay.

Mosquitos get vicious on my bait sites late in the spring season. I just use an unscented deet product.

If planning on a head net, I much prefer one of black mesh than the green ones. Kind of like a neutral density filter. The green ones to me, are like driving into the sun with a smeared windshield.

if you buy one, wash it about 10 times in the washer, it helps it breath better, when new they kinda hot in warm weather

Head net.

Picardin 20.

Permethrin spray on clothing or factory applied permethrin clothing.

Thermacell. Works well for us here even in early deer season near a swamp. Take plenty of refills if you’re running it for hours at a time.

100% deet on exposed skin. Permethian on all clothes. Have a Thermacell on before you get to the stand. Make sure you bring extra pads and butane...

Do this and you are golden.

Thermacell and mesh suit should be fine. I would not use deet due to bear may spook?

My outfitter in New Brunswick thinks bears may smell the Thermocell. He recommends hunters cover up.

Thermacell all the way.

To people who think it may scare bears, if they can smell it they can smell you too. Sitting there swatting bugs and fidgeting around will spook more bears than any bug spray or a thermacell.

I shot a BC eligible black bear, 21 6/16 once from the ground, 17 yards from the bait with buddy sitting next to me with a lit Winston.

They aren't dumb, they don't think that barrel is manna that fell from heaven. They know humans are in the area. Sit still and relax, if you try to sit super still you'll actually get more tense and fidget more. Relax is the key word, and i don't know anyone who can do that with mosquitos all over them.

I just hunt in Proper 100% Ripstop Cotton BDU's, usually Woodland blouse over O.D. trousers unless I'm huntin' turkey.

I wouldn't use a thermacel over a baited bear stand. Most bear guides don't want their clients to use them because the bear can smell them easily, associate with someone sitting in a stand, and stay away from baits when one is in use.

ID LISTEN TO THE GUIDES THAT DO THIS FOR A LIVING.

Its very simple I've been doing it for over 50 years bear hunting and any other animal hunted from a permanent stand.......for weeks before the hunt put clothing that the person has worn with what ever insect repellent that is going to be used during the hunt.....I put out every couple days and any time it rains different cloths and insect repellant.....
Most bears will just walk in to a bait and don't even care your sitting there..... others will look and sniff then come in......
