No proof here.....just an opinion.....Yes...flat based bullets are more accurate than boat tails. But one will have to do a whale of a lot of shooting to prove it.
This also assumes all other factors are identical.....

I've never seen it, and can damn sure NOT hold the difference in a hunting situation.

Benchresters think so. And I'm pretty sure no one jpknows more about pure precision than them.
Boattails come into their own with range.
Mostly use boattails myself. Way I shoot, it doesn't matter.

The benchrest guys will tell you they are because if the boattail or the crown is imperfect it can impart a side force when the bullet exits the muzzle due to the gas acting on the angled boat tail. I don't know if it's true, but I can see how it makes sense.

Crow hunter,
The boattail and crown can be perfect, and the flat-base will still be more accurate at closer ranges--say out to 200-300 yards, where most "short range" benchrest shooting takes place. This is because the boattail allows hot gas from the muzzle to slightly destabilize the bullet. This is why SR benchresters use flat-base or, at most, bullets with very short boattails.
Beyond around 300 the higher BC of boattails results in finer accuracy, due to less wind drift, even in very mild breezes.

The 55 grain Hornady soft point bullets with a flat base are tough to beat up to 100 yards. I cant comment on them passed that distance but I like the results up to 100 yards on paper.

kwg The Hornady 100gn SP is about the most consistently accurate bullet I have seen in 25 cal. It has shot as good as Ballistic Tips, SSTs and Sierras in at least four of my rifles.

Years and years ago Speer told me to use FB bullets for under 300 yards and a BT for anything longer. I shot a little (very little BR and varmint matches) BR way back and FB was the way to fly.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

No idea of the context of your conversation, but Speer used to promote their boattails as being softer. Designed for longer range game. That might account for their advice also. Although it's decent advise generally.

I've shot lots of both and my rifles prefer and have always shot flat base spitzers more accurately than boat tails.

As a former bullet maker of true Benchrest bullets (Benchrest with a capital 'B' ) , M.D.'s comments are pretty much spot on. With my flat based bullets and using different point up dies to produce shank diameters of .3083 to .3090 and pressure ring diameters from .3085 to .3093, you couldn't shoot the difference, no matter what type of crown was on the barrel.....provided it was a perfectly indicated crown and the edge was carefully chamfered at 60 degrees. That says less about the crown and more about the bullets flat base...specifically the pressure ring...being the biggest equalizer. Many of the 6 PPC Group shooters have drifted to using a short boat tailed bullet lately. Keeping those guns in tune throughout the days temp and humidity changes is a challenge and many feel the short boat tail widens that tune window a smidgen. In a hunting or casual target situation, your barrel will tell you what it likes. Good shootin'. -Al

Thank you Mr. Al I'm NOT disputing anyone at all. I have had NO trouble with 30 cal 165 B T bullets in my 06. I don't have pix to prove any difference but The last time I killed a WT with a 150 gr 06 was before 1986 in Miss. (Mississippi) I've been shooting/hunting 165 B T pointy bullets (brand undisclosed) in my 06 s, since '86 after I moved. Most of the WT I've killed with the 06 have been less than 300 yds. AGAIN not arguing, just my experience with MY rifle and B T bullets. Jerry

To expand on my original answer (not in my experience), in the late 70's and early eighties, I was an fairly enthusiastic BR competitor and won a lot of stuff. I shot mostly 6mm's (6x47, 6PPC) but also some 22's (222, 223) and a 308. In the 6's, I shot the Sierra 70 BT for matches which weren't too important but mostly I shot 70 grain Mc Cracken bullet. I had these in both boattail and flat base and my best aggs were almost always with the boattails. In the 22's, I did better with the FB. In the 308, most of the best bullets were boattails and that is what I shot. Again, the best performers were McCracken boat tails. I don't compete anymore but the boattails still perform well enough that any improvement would be minimal. GD

I wish I could shoot well enough to tell the difference.

Could the shooting sports exist if the word "inherently" did not?

I would say 95% of the standard factory hunting/varmint rifles available aren't accurate enough to tell the difference, and about the same % of shooters. Benchrest guns and shooters are a whole different game.I haven't kept up the last few years, but back in the 80's and 90's you seldom if ever found boatails at a 100-200 yard match.
