Gunmaker Remington Arms Co. has offered around $33 million to settle a lawsuit brought by nine families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre.

Remington Arms Co. LLC and Remington Outdoors Co. Inc., collectively referred to as "Remington," offered $3.66 million to each of the nine plaintiffs in the lawsuit against them over the 2012 Newtown, Conn., mass shooting, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

Adam Lanza, 20, used Remington's Bushmaster XM-15 to carry out the elementary school massacre before killing himself.

Lawyers for the families said they will "consider their next steps," in response to this offer.

A federal law protects gun manufacturers from wrongful death lawsuits brought forth by family members, but in their 2014 lawsuit, the families of the Sandy Hook victims instead sought to hold Remington responsible for marketing practices that praised the militaristic qualities of their rifles, potentially in violation of Connecticut law.

Remington, the oldest gun manufacturer in the U.S., had appealed to the Supreme Court in 2019 to reverse a decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court to allow the case to go to trial, but the court declined to take it up.

“The regulation of advertising that threatens the public’s health, safety, and morals has long been considered a core exercise of the states’ police powers,” Connecticut Supreme Court Justice Richard Palmer wrote in the majority opinion in 2019.

Last year, Remington filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in two years.

Earlier this month, the lawyers representing the nine families said Remington had given them a strange collection of tens of thousands of cartoons, video files and GIFS in documents turned over to them. According to court documents the cartoons depicted “people go-karting riding dirt bikes, and socializing."

Dont like the settlement offer but I can understand it. Chances are good any jury up there could have a lot of gun grabber twats on it that would love to make some headlines on CNN with a gazillion dollar verdict.

Its had to believe that anyone so dumb could even feed a child after the titty milk dried up, let alone pass a back ground check to even buy a gun !

But theyve opened the door IMHO for extortion by others.

This is how they will confiscate our guns. Lawsuits that claim the gun manufacturer had unfair advertisements, and they settle for millions and drive the gun maker out of business.

Here she is. Detective Mattson of the State Patrol, holding the demonic rifle that killed the kids at Sandy Hook. A chubby 55 year old Lesbo with titties sagging down to her gun belt. If the Governor gives the orders she will be glad to confiscate your guns. She looks like a real warrior it makes the citizens feel safe to know that she is on duty. Probably knocking down $110K a year.

you gotta go to court on this during a time when the AR-15 is the most popular gun sold.

Of course the risk is the plaintiff showing bodies of young children shot to a runaway jury, but you are just asking for every gun shot victim to go after you

That will set a really bad precedent for future lawsuits against other firearms manufacturers.

All those car commercials showing their Go-fast cars, Dodge and Toyota come to mind for recent commercials where the cars are burning out/drifting/etc. Are they now subject to lawsuits as they are promoting that kind of behavior.

Personally, I think Remington should go to trial on this. But, entering into a private settlement agreement does not set precedent.

Settles it for me, never again buying a new Remington.

Wouldn't be surprised if other manufacturers went into the pool to make sure this doesn't go to trial and become a precedent. Why the Supremes didn't take this is beyond my comprehension.

and the answer might be that the families of the dead could demand millions from HumVee.

I'd guess that in the financial situation Remington is in presently, they figure it's cheaper to avoid the court case than it is to just pay. Were they to lose, who knows what the award might be?
