Just picked one up for my grandson to use for elk hunt this year. We are in mostly open country average shot distance 300 yards. He’s moving up from a 30-06 fast 150 load, recoil not an issue he 6’4 250+ and hit targets out to 600 yards with the 06.

It will certainly be a Barnes TTSX Not sure if I start with 165 or 180 likely using IMR 4350 & Winchester LR primers. Any suggestions?

I am not a TTSX user or a short mag user, but I have shot lots and lots of elk with the .300 wm and 165's of various makes.. Right now the Accubond is my favorite.. Either should be fine, but the 165 should shoot a bit flatter out to 500-600 yards..

I use the standard 168gn TSX in my 300wsm with h4350. Once you find the sweet spot for jump it's a very consistent shooter.

I'd run a 165 or 168. Skip the 180. Maybe look at the 175 LRX too.

I've used the 150 TTSX in .308, .30-06, .300 H&H, and the .300 Win. Magnum because it's a very accurate bullet that requires minimal load development. I've used this bullet for elk, but only in a .308. However, I see no reason why it wouldn't work well in other chamberings. I've seen good results accuracy-wise with the 165 TTSX, just not quite as good overall as the lighter bullet.

I used 175 lrx on a moose hunt.
My distance was 20 yards and I shot him in chest.
Worked well, except for the swim at 20 degrees.
I would have to check load.

Memtb, have you ever tried the 175 LRX? When I get back to loading for my 300WSM, I am going to work with that bullet. My old pre 64 model 70 300wby loves it.

Another for 168 TTSX. 300 wby for me drops them right now. My elk guide went straight to order some as soon as we rode in to his house in Lincoln Forest near Ruidoso. This after we cleaned and packed mine out.

Thanks the 165’s will get first shot. I’ve used 150’s in 30-06 & 180’s in the 300 Weatherby both with good success the 165’s just haven’t shot as well in those 2.

Several friends here use the 300 WSM and the 2 most popular are the 168 TSX/TTSX and the 180 NAB. I used the 175 LRX last year in the Win Mag (right at 3100) for a 100yd shot on a cow elk. I purposely put it through the high lungs as I wanted to see if it "opened any faster" than a regular TSX/TTSX. The LRX was perfection. No real bloodshot and lungs were soup. Only 100yds (or so close I can call it!) but it was fun! Good luck to you Pard.
BTW, I loaded 64gr R17/168TTSX in my Grand Daughters 300WSM Kimber 8400 and it was very temp stable. Also a tad over 3100.

I just worked through easy development of the 175 LRX over 68.4gr of Staball for 3100 and great accuracy and that node going from 67.8gr = 3087fps to 68.8 = 3112/3121. 68.4gr with 2.175"BTO has shown to be easy and consistent. I worked up the 169TTSX for the 30-06, and wouldn't hesitate to use either or the 165TTSX in a 300wsm.

IIRC, due to the COAL constraints with the 300 WSM, the 165's ogive works better than the 168. Same in the 300 WM.

I know this isn’t exactly what you asked, but I would suggest consider trying 152gr Hammer Hunter bullets.

I’ve killed several elk with mine and the 165 TSX. Never an issue with that bullet.
