Had to cut out an old fence post on my place and it is heavy as iron and nice yellow color. Figure it must be osage. If that is indeed the case, how hard would it be to cut some knife handle blanks from one of those? Thought since it was 50 years plus old, it should be pretty stable hopefully. Would love some knives made from it. Will try to post a picture later.
I have no wood working equipment so would be up for trading some of it for handles if someone has any interest.

If indeed Osage orange, it will make strong hard knife handles. Be aware that the resulting handle will NOT stay that nice yellow color no matter how you try to seal it or keep strong light away. It will age to a muddy dark brown. John

I'd be okay with it browning out. Here is a picture. This look like Osage Orange to you?

Looks like it probably is Osage orange. I have a few knife handles made of Osage orange “or hedge” as it is sometimes called. Makes great handles in hammers and other tools as well. Tough stuff.

Just completed two knives in Osage….they turned out great.

So for you guys with more knowledge than me, would I cut that post at about the 11 oclock to 5 oclock position in the photo? Then cut handles with the heart in the inside center? Its about 36" long. Kind of more interested now thanks to the feedback.

It is a fairly easy working wood. I enjoy using it and plan a few more. Just have to get our log home built first. Les

Thanks, it handles nicely. One of my favorites though I have considered shortening it a little and making it a nice sheath for every day carry.

Osage Orange/Hedge Apple makes for great firewood. It burns hot and a long time in a wood stove. Reminds me of Hickory in that way and the fact that it makes good handles for tools.

That looks like a perfect place to use a froe to start/make your slabs.

Used in longbows and its color will continue to mature for decades.
