Looking for some load advice for my new to me Browning BPS 10 that I have modified to make a turkey gun that I will pack a few times next year. I have purchased Cheddite and Federal hulls and some TPS and BPD-10 wads. I also have plenty of Lil Gun powder. I am looking for a load that utilizes 2.5oz or larger payload. I know its overkill but I don't care. I like loading for maximum pellet count. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Tommy duliba (shooter) and I (mostly tommy, i just provided the gun and pulled the trigger) developed the first 10 gauge tss turkey load back in the day. It was an absolute killer. It used federal hulls, 2.5 oz of shot and alliant steel powder. Those were the good old days, when the tss guys shared info and the number of people loading it for turkeys were few and far between, and information was readily available, before tss became commercialized, and everyone wanted their hands in the pot.

For the full load information, I'll put you in touch with the guy if you want it, but I'll say with that gun, a kicks buck kicker. 720 was the best choke i found for tss.

We have been messing with loading for the 10's for a few months now and found the loads we are going to use. We are loading TSS #9's in a 3oz load and getting consistent patterns of 550 to 620 pellets in the 10" at 40yards. Pretty satisfied that these loads will kill way past where I would attempt a shot so we are done. We are having success with an Indian Creek .690 in my new to me Browning Gold 10 light turkey model, my BPS that I had barrel shortened to 21" and using a Comp n Choke XXXFull we believe is .695 constriction, my hunting buddies SP!0 Turkey model with Rhino .695. All three of these guns are using similar components to get the 550 plus pellet count with the highest going to my modified BPS at 612 in 10". We are running 2 grains less of powder in the BPS because that produced the hottest core with plenty in the 20". The SP10 and Browning Gold we are running a little hotter but getting really good percentages of the total shot within the 20" at 40 yards. Handloads really make the 10's shine!

That's a pretty sweet set up! I didn't realize this thread was that old when I commented on it. If I remember correctly I was getting between 350-390 #8s in the 10 at 40 with the 2.5 oz load.

350 t0 390 *'s is really impressive especially in a 2.5oz load! Been told that the slightly larger shot, above 9's, holds a tighter pattern at longer ranges? Curious if you noticed, or tried the 8's at anything over 40 yards and how well did it maintain numbers in the 10" past 40 ? I know what we are ding is overkill but if we are going to pack a 10 there needs to be some kinda justification as I also use 410, 20, and 12's which in general are lighter guns and easier to pack. We are considering trying the larger shot and maybe even duplexing some loads and giving them a try.

It'd been a few years, but the best I remember, it was still around 225 at 65 yards. Never shot it any further

Goodness, don’t fire any of those skyward when a plane is overhead. I’m seriously impressed that anyone can afford enough TSS to put in a 10ga shell.

Please post some patterns when you get ‘em right.

Don't have your back against a tree when that gets touched off.

Wonder how TSS would do in a 1.75" bore replica cannon? Should fill multiple tags easily.

Hello, looking to start rolling my own 10ga tss #8’s. Picked up couple boxes of the 3oz loads from salt creek and want to try to duplicate. Wanting to use lil gun powder if possible but have no where near the shotgun wildcating experience as I do rifle and need some data to get me going. Was wondering if you have any suggestions. Will be using tps wads and chedite hulls. Thanks!

These are my questions as well. Ten gauge, TSS #9.5, powder, etc. I have hulls/wads but need data, maybe powder, the shot, and press with dies. Tanks, Rusty.

Still wondering. I'm interested. Don't know how to buy any of these loads so would like to roll my own. RZ.

You will reconsider after the first time that you fire a 2 1/2 oz load in the BPS. I had a Mag-10 and although really heavy, the recoil was easily tolerated. Not so with the BPS.

1 1/2 oz load in a 10 guage would be a dove load.
