Been wanting a N-frame for a while. Was holding out for a 27 or a 28 but stumbled on an Outdoorsman and couldn't pass it up for the price. Definitely not collector grade but it all good as I'm gonna shoot the s.hit out of it. Biggest wart is someone bubba-ed the Patridge front sight and filed it to some fever dreamed approximation of a bead. After that is remedied and I give her a good scrub down she should be good to go.

Good on you!

Looks just nice enough, not ugly, but usable.

For no logical reason, the right .38/44 Heavy Duty has been my grail gun. I would like a 4 or 5 inch, nickel or blue, in decent and sound condition, not reamed out to .357 mag. I’ll know it when I see it. I’ve come close but passed on more than one Outdoorsman. There’s an Outdoorsman nearby, but it’s a real dog. Really bad refinish…looks like Dulite.

Yours looks nice, other than that front sight. How do you plan to fix it? Are you going to shoot regular.38 Specials in it or load up some real .38/44 loads? In any event, have fun with it.

From the days when they were expected to double as a bludgeon. Nice!

Great find on a classic.

Took it out quick this morning - goes bang. Front sight gotta go. Anyone happen to know correct height as they shipped from the factory? Thinking I'd like a brass bead insert Patridge - anyone know of an easy button off the top of their head?

I can't recall if Ethan Edwards owns the Outdoorsman or the Heavy Duty. You might ask him. Perhaps his is an Outdoorsman like yours.

My old edition of The Standard Catalog of S&W says the post-war Outdoorsman had either "1/8-inch or 1/10-inch Patridge front sight", fwiw. Entries for other versions of 38/44s are either silent on that or say 1/10-inch.

Ha! It didn't specify which direction so I didn't even think about that. Yeah, seems a little short now that I imagine it.

I can put the caliper to mine when I get home tomorrow or Monday. I have one that’s about the same vintage with an unmolested patridge.

It’ll be a bitch to fit one and have it look nice. They pinned them in and then polished the pins down flush before they blues them. I would think the best way to do it and have it look presentable would be to make a pin with rounded ends that fit slightly proud so it would resemble the pinned base on the 357s. Another option would be a hollow blade that you could cut what remains of the original down to fit inside and then pin it on. Myriad options if you happen to have a milling machine at your disposal, kinda a tight spot if you don’t.

Cool gun. Nice pickup.
