Never been in a manure pit. We did not have them on our farm. But how can a farmer with a manure pit not know of the high potential for toxic/lethal gasses in them.
Sad story.

Sucks.

Are those dairy manure pits enclosed some? Sounds like they could use someone above with extraction equipment like we had to have on station some places I've worked.

Condolences to their whole community and family.

I dunno how a family, or the farm, recovers from that 😕. Terrible.

My dad worked on a farm back in the early 70's and they had a manure pit, I accidently stepped in it but was able to pull myself out pretty quick. I can't imagine getting stuck in one and not being able to get out, what a horrible way to die.

My uncle had one on his dairy farm, it was required by the EPA to avoid run-off during heavy rains, to keep the manure from getting in the waterways, creeks, etc. They would fill it up, and then pump it out for fertilizer onto the pastures in smaller doses, while avoiding the run-off problems. While my uncle has retired, as far as I know, that pit is still out there.

It likely one went in and was overcome by H2S. And the would be rescuers succumbed to the same. It’s happened before.

Back in the ‘70’s a school I taught at lost 6 students in a similar situation. There were two sets of brothers who perished. None involved survived so there was no way to figure out how it happened. The most traumatic situation I’ve ever been around.

To those trying to make a joke out of a tragic situation - your simplemindness is showing

Condolences. Sorry to hear. I wonder if they had any way to purge the air. What a shame.

I work for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and we help a lot of farmers build manure pits. Manure gas safety is strongly emphasized and warning signs are posted all around. There are safety rules like don't agitate on a calm day and NEVER enter an enclosed pit without a SCBA and a spotter. But sometimes people forget, sometimes something happens.

There was an incident in central Pa. about 3-5 years ago. Grandpa was agitating the pit and was fine. But he walked around to a lower level and there was his grandson passed out on the ground. He dragged him to safety and the kid recovered. As near as anyone could figure, the gas (which is heavier than air) had settled at a lower level. Grandpa was tall enough to be in good air, the kid wasn't.

Cooperative Extension, Pa. Dept of Ag and NRCS take every chance we get to remind folks about manure pit safety. But bad things still happen.

Condolences to the family.

Dale

Huh?

Is Clark fishing offshore? Sea World? Wild Animal Park? Checking Barrio Logan for illegals? I think the Fair is over, so he's probably not showing Iguanas in the Open Division.

Oh, I forgot, LeggoLand is right up the road in Encinitas or Carslbad or such. Maybe Travis is a Leggo junkie?

This same thing happened in my area (Salem, ny) 20 years ago. First guy was overcome by h2s and the rescuers followed suit. Very sad.
