So what did the list end up to be after a poll was taken by the public? Was the 444 marlin left on list? Was the 35 whelen added?

Have you checked the Iowa DNR hunting site? Here is what I see...
RIFLES: Rifles firing straight wall or other centerfire ammunition propelling an expanding-type
bullet with a maximum diameter of no less than
.350 of an inch and no larger than .500 of an inch
and with a published or calculated muzzle energy
of 500 foot pounds or higher is legal for hunting
deer during the youth and disabled hunting season
and first and second shotgun seasons.
The following is a partial list of allowable cartridges that has generated the most questions on legality. Cartridges meeting the criteria defined above
are legal whether listed here or not

.35 Whelen
.350 Legend
.358 Winchester
.375 Winchester
.40 S&W
.44 Magnum
.444 Marlin
.45 Long Colt
.45 Raptor
.450 Bushmaster
.450 Marlin
.45-70 Govt
.460 S&W
.500 S&W

458 Win
470 Nitro Express
458 Lott
375 H&H
375 Wby
378 Wby
358 Norma Mag
.........

What's not to like about the new regs?? laugh

I just now read the regulations on page 38 of the DNR Regulations handbook/PDF

Any state that would condone an avowed communist senator to campaign for president can't be too smart. Luv2 do you hunt there? Be well, RZ.

180gr out of a 35 Whelen or a 358 Winchester doing 2700-2800. yeah, that's equivalent to a straight wall cartridge or a slug gun. lol

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy for you Hawkeyes, but GMAFB.

For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Stupid allowing with the new rules I dont think the dnr in this state actually understands the ballistics of what they allowed. Well I will take advantage of. I'll be careful

I see the 35 Whalen and the 358 Win are on the list. I can’t believe it. Not because they aren’t very good cartridges but they are so different than the other past accepted straight-walled cartridges and counter to what the DNR originally sought to allow in short-range cartridges for safeties sake.

But what’s even worse, the language calls for at least a 35 cal bullet with at least 500 lbs of energy….or more! Meaning the the 358 Norma or the 358 STA, and the 375 H&H are a go…but, for example, a 257 Roberts will get you arrested.

But it’s good no cartridge larger than .500 is allowed; thankfully, the 500 Jeffrey just got under the wire.

I wonder who advises them on ballistics.

I'm thinking one of swamplord's .35 cal or bigger creations would reach to the state line from any point in Iowa.
Now if I could justify buying a $600 tag to hunt whitetails...

From the Iowa DNR:

“Which bottle-neck cartridges are legal?”

“All of them as long as bullet diameter is at least .350 and no greater than .500.”

“That”…is pretty amazing!” 😳 🙂

So the 408 CheyTac, 416 Barrett, etc…. Holy hell. I’m building a 35 WSM only because I have a spare Win action for it. I’ll have to lend it to a good friend that lives there to try it out. 200gr AB’s at 2900 or better is a rough guess and should work PDG.

Why not a 35 Remington? I can also recommend the 35 Whelen as i hunt with just about either one every year. You can't beat a 35cal gas-checked slug. Blows large holes in targets and subdues game quickly

The 35 Rem meets the criteria.

Even more stupid....I can legally hunt with my 357 Magnum Marlin lever gun, but a 30-30 will get me in trouble.

I can't speak for where others hunt in Iowa but where we go, any rifle would be no more risky than where I hunt in Wisconsin every year. It was shotgun/muzzy/pistol until a few years ago. We have seen no problems here with rifles-maybe the deer have! smile
