Lately I’ve been interested in learning about them. I am a little late to the party, but the 1895 has always intrigued me by its looks and the history around them. Does anyone hunt with the 405?

I've hunted my original a few times but no success unfortunately. As crshelton above and TR before him can attest, nothing they won't work on!

My ex wife’s grand pa had a 405 that looked like it hadn’t been fired. Obviously it had, but it was in pristine condition

Been kicking around trading my No 1 for a 95. The Ruger is a nice rifle, but I can see me using a 95 for a saddle rifle.

iking,
Even though the standard factory load is with a 300 grain bullet, you can handload the 210 grain 41 mag pistol bullet on up through the 400 grain Woodleigh that I used on my Cape Buffalo.
However, there is not much that the 300 grain Barnes or North Fork will not kill.

Viking,
I'm planning on taking a 1895 Winchester in .405 up to Alaska on a Spring brown bear hunt in 2022. I'm currently talking to a few gunsmiths on putting a quarter rib with integrated leupold quick attach scope mounts and express sight on it and a barrel band for a sling. It'll be setup with a scout scope setup.

I got Mountain Molds to make a 350-grain cast bullet. I use an alloy of wheel weights and babbit metal water quenched, sized 413 dia. Very accurate using IMR 3031. I'm looking to find a Redfield receiver sight. the buckhorn truly suck.

Dans800, that’s something awesome to look forward to.

I am down in the Fairview area. When I head back to the DevilsLake area I stopped by that gun shop in Stanley, that’s a neat place, hellava collection in there. Assuming you’ve been there.

I only killed a couple of whitetails with my .405, but they were both instant kills with the Hornady 300 gr. FP factory load.

I went to an auction today, there were 2 1895s on it. They were fancy ones with engraving. The 06 went for 2000 and the 405 for 2600.

Viking,
Thank you for the report on the two 1895 Winchesters.
My unfired Safe Queen is a Deluxe 1895 .405 and your report provides a reasonable value for it. I bought it years ago because my wife thought it was pretty. And it is.

WHB,
Your Ruger in .405 WCF looks like a well balanced and fast handling rifle and yes the Hornady 300 grain ammo makes fast work of most big game. I used that on all deer sized game and handloaded North Fork 300 grain for Nilgai and other tough game.
The use of the 400 grain Woodleigh in Africa was a fun project to see how the 400 grain bullet performed. The answer was very well with no bullets ever recovered, even from buffalo. I am confident that a 400 grain solid would put an elephant down. Heck, a 300 grain NF might take an Ele too.

I had to look on GB for pictures, they looked like High Grades or anniversary models with the dull stainless looking receivers. Definitely safe queens, although I would shot the [bleep] out of the 30-06. The 405, well if a guy could find ammunition..

If I wasn’t buying property, those old farts would’ve coughed up more 😆.

I ran across two 1895’s yesterday . One was old 30-40 Krag for $1200. The rear stock had been altered. A piece of hardwood was used to raise the cheek piece. It looked like some old timers winter project in a dimly lit cabin. Cheek weld was about perfect with the Lyman peep sight installed. I loved the history of that one.

The other was a 405 for$1850. It looked new.

I passed, too many construction projects going on..dam it., that and ammunition availability for either is a problem.
