I have a 2019 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi engine. Specs say it has an oil capacity of 7 quarts. The last time I changed the oil I dumped in 6 quarts plus a little. Drove it a bit to be sure the filter was full. When I checked the diptick it was way overfilled, maybe an inch or so. Yesterday I changed the oil and this time I only filled it with about 5 1/2 quarts. Drove a bit, let it cool and when I checked the dipstick it indicated Full. I do not know what to make of this unless my dipstick is not properly positioned. Any thoughts?

Mines an older model (2010) and it does hold 7 quarts, you sure it's not leaking somewhere?

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Mine also holds 7 quarts.

Did you change the filter? I have a 2009 and a 2017 they both take 7!

Yes, I changed the filter and no it is not leaking. I always park on cardboard after an oil change to be sure there are no leaks. Also if it was leaking it would take more oil, not less!

Maybe an oil analysis might be a good idea to rule out fuel or antifreeze dilution. I put in exactly the 7 quarts that the manual calls for and my F-150 dip stick reads 1/2 a quart low, but it stays there. Increasing the oil level on the dip stick would be a red flag in my book.

Massive sludge buildup? Probably not.
Big dent in the pan? You would see that
Incorrect dipstick? Possible
Changing when it is very cold so you don’t really dump all the oil? Maybe.

I have a Ford Super Duty that has a dipstick that is wrong, it was a factory defect that the corrected in later years. I would have the dealer check to see if any factory bulletins have been issued for that model year and engine.

Does your 5.7 V8 Hemi only have 6 cylinders and 3.6 liter displacement?

My 08 takes 7 with filter. Is there a chance they put the wrong dipstick in it. If you know someone with about the same truck try theirs.

Could it be possible to get a bad filter that isn't letting oil into it?
