The weird stock on the Browning X-bolt helps alot with felt recoil. I've got one with a light barrel in 325WSM and it doesn't feel to recoil anything more than a 30/06. Accuracy is excellent. Triggers are heavy but you can buy an aftermarket spring to fix that.

Find a Rem 700 AAC-SD with 20" threaded barrel. Had one and shot very well even in the OE houge stock. They can be found for around $400 - $450 if your patient.

As mathman suggested, a .223 makes a lot of sense with regard to recoil, barrel life, economy, etc etc. The Ruger .223s are mostly 1-9”, but that lets you shoot bullets up to 69gr and maybe some heavier. When I let my son choose from several of my rifles, he picked the Predator .308 right off, as he had used it to kill a couple of does on a cull hunt in VA and liked it. That trigger makes it easy to shoot well, much better than the standard LC6. I whacked a couple with it myself using 165 BTs and about 42gr of RL15.

I have one of these in a 223 and a bud had a pair of Creedmoors, all outstanding shooters.

The 308 in this would be a nice one.

You can even adjust the slack out of the trigger if you don't like the take up before it gets to that breaking point.

I think your pricing is a little off. I haven't checked lately, but six months ago they were selling for over $1K on gunbroker. The same rifle new was $800 at Sportsman's Warehouse in Pueblo around the same time frame. I was seriously considering that rifle when I was looking for a suppressor ready .308 Win.

The OP could try checking the classifieds here. 700 barreled action for sale, I'm not part of this sale. Just pointing out there is one available that might fit the OP's needs.

When faced with the same question, I chose a Sako M85 HB varmint stainless .308. No regrets. Comes with an accuracy guarantee. No modifications needed, it works as its is supposed to right out of the box. Can't say that of most of the other cheaper wannabes.

Remington used to.make a m700 Police rifle heavy barrel in 308 win. Previous owner had it threaded for a JP muzzle brake or a can. With the brake it is loud but just lays on the bags no recoil at all. Very pleasant to shoot. Mb

What do you recommend? Thanks

Cut him off at the pass and get him something GOOD,if only so he can taste same, while he still can. Hint.

There's NOTHING "redeeming" in a 308,whether from accuracy, precision, terminal effects, performance, fiscal incentive, recoil, noise or fun standpoints. Read that again. Now one more time, fhuqking slooowwwwllllllllllly. Hint.

Grant him opportunity to literally SEE The Light and put him in proximity to a GOOD 22LR. If dexterity is there,a single shot Anschutz 54 will reliably blow minds. Mag fed to me,means Vudoo and Vudoo alone. Hint.

Noise/recoil are largely erased from the equation and FUN makes an appearance, like never fhuqking before. 308 "performance" is easily scaled, surpassed and absolutely fhuqking destroyed. Hint.

Thank me later.

Just sayin'.

The 308 bug is a good one, long barrel life, holes big enough to easily see in the target at 200 yards. Can be made to shoot really well, recoil isn't bad at all especially in a varmint weight rifle. Easy to load for and the thought of getting one sets Stick's man bun on fire.Lotta wins there.

In Rickety's "defense", to her bumbling Dumbfhuqktitude,I've simply shot more 308 rounds in a day, than she has in her "life"...the "lucky" kchunt. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Though in "fairness",nothing is Fhuqking FUNNIER than The Texas Version of ANYTHING and her keen "understanding" never misses a beat. Hint. Fhuqking LAUGHING!

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

She is "boldly" fueled by an AMAZINGLY long list of exceptionally WELL founded Insecurities and never misses an oblivious opportunity to "flaunt" same. Hint. LAUGHING!

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

Pardon my having got/bought/shot more Custom 308's alone, than Rickety has all other chamberings in her ENTIRE Imagination and Pretend Catalog,I'll again reiterate the sanctity of a GOOD 22LR. I'll save the OEM offerings for a rainy day. Read that again. Now one more time. Hint.

THE M852. Mike Rock 10",Marty steel bottom,Marty rail,Kelly filled the A5 HEAVY,AJ's reamer by Dave. Never fired a singled round of '852 in it,because there were superior boolits to dance in that throat. HINT.

Just saying.

Thank me later.

Rickety,

I've never liked the 308,none of which is a "secret" and all of which is factored upon performance. Hint.

Fortunately for you,Imagination and Pretend are free,so you can "afford" to "contribute"...you "lucky kchunt. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Nor can you speak to something as simplistic as 22 Long Rifle. Hint. Fhuqking LAUGHING!
