I found one of these a couple of years ago with pretty nice wood for a No. 3. I sent it to Roger Renner for his "American saddle rifle" treatment, which really improved the ergonomics of the stock for me. It looks great with No. 1 style cheeks where the buttstock meets the action, and a reshaped Schnabel forearm tip that also does away with the barrel band. Mine shoots very well with a Burris Fastfire III red dot sight that doesn't look out of place to my eye. Best results so far use IMR 3031 or 4350 with 150 Partitions, averaging about 2650 fps and 1.5" at 100 yards with the dot sight. A 165 Partition load is still in work and clocks around 2425 fps with 4350. I tried some 180 and 200 grain bullets, with noticeably heavier recoil and no advantage for deer. The Renner work cost me more than the rifle, but it really makes it feel light compared to the clubby factory pattern and the grip improvement is significant. I hope to try it on OK whitetails or a local muley this year.

I have a Krag in a 1898 Cavalry Cabine....I use SR 4759 in it. I really enjoy shooting that rifle.

Ross Seyfried wrote an article in the December 2002 Handloader magazine touting 220 grain round nose (Hornady and Sierra) at original velocity (2100 FPS+-). I can’t find the article but you can get a copy of the magazine.
