My wife bought me a Halo thermal for my birthday. I leave for the peninsula Oct. 5 and this would be the first time I took it hunting. Is it legal to use pre-glassing for bear? Not on a rifle but just for glassing.

How difficult would it be to pickup the phone and call ADF&G? I’m assuming you have a phone…

Are you talking about thermal imaging binoculars or infrared scope? They only work at night and I don't think it's legal to hunt at night. Good idea to check the regulations as indicated above.

It IS legal to hunt at night, using "natural light" IIRC. No electronic gizmos allowed tho. . We don't have "shooting hours".

I've seen winter nights with moonlight on snow that were bright enough for shooting out to 200-300 yard. Never done it tho.

I would hazard a guess that using thermal imaging to asses what animals are in the area is as legal as trail cameras, some of which are.

Just not for actually using them to shoot an animal, but that's just a guess. Too lazy/ don't care enough to inquire further.....

I don’t have it attached to any rifle and not interested in hunting game with it. I have a Gen 4 scope for coyotes and hogs on an AR15. I was floored when I looked through one in the mountains in Spain during daylight hours and seeing ibex behind bushes.

Had to have one.

I absolutely love bear hunting in Alaska. Just thought it would be fun to play with one when you’re looking for black dots off in the horizon. Not a biggie.

ps Yes, I travel light. Socks/base layers dry out quickly in a sleeping bag…..ain’t my first rodeo…..

Yes of course. I wasn't thinking ALASKA. I remember being at the medical camp (14,200') on McKinley in June. It never really gets dark. The sun goes behind the mountain and the temp drop dramatically. But the "white nights" are as bright as day in the shade.
