What are the issues with a 243 on a 700 long action, if any?

Reason for asking is that I want to be able to seat out farther than 2.8" OAL.

Thanks

It would, but already have a 6CM in the form of a 24" sporter 700 SA in a Grayboe. I like it.

Thinking a heavier rifle and have a long action here as well as a stock and all the loading kit and brass in 243.

If I had a choice in a long action I would go with thhe 6m Remington, longer neck and a tad more case, but that's only my preference.it doesn't seem to hit the pressure ceiling as fast as the 243- besides SC, it's based on the 257 Bob/7X57 case ! :>)

I agree, but already have lots of new brass and Forster/Redding dies in 243.

I may or may not do this. Just wondering what the hassles are with the LA. and you're right about the 257R /7x57 case part of the argument. smile

Sort of apples to oranges but I have a Savage Axis in 243. Detachable magazine but I can't see that an extra 3/4 inch of action makes much difference. Works and feeds just fine. Wayne.

There's no real issues using a long action except a marginally less stiff action, marginally heavier and marginally longer. The main disadvantage is that to many people it just looks odd having a short action cartridge in a long action. You don't need to go to a long action. The Remington 700 short action can be fitted with an extended magazine so you can seat out to about 3". You can also use a Winchester Model 70 short action and you can seat out to about 3.04" or a Mauser 98 action and seat out to a simi;lar length.

Thanks .... That's about what I thought. It's mostly a matter of using what I have on hand.

Probably a better idea to sell the action and take any money I would have spent on getting a bbl and having it installed and buying a 243 instead. smile

I picked up a heavy barrel in 260 off a Rem VLS, some local guy sold me for $75.00....

I put it on a long action Model 700, and had the chamber reamed out a little more to accept long 6.5 bullets, out a lot further ala 6.5 Creedmoor.

it was well worth the small effort... Although I also have a long action 700 with a 6mm Rem barrel on it, with a one in 7 twist, and that was well worth it.

If I had the 700 LA and a 243 barrel with a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 twist... I'd certainly go that route over picking up a 6 Creedmoor.

Shot thousands of rounds out of an M-24 SWS built on a long Remington action in 308/7.62x51.... Never had any feeding issues... Go for it.

You could AI it to reduce case trimming and get more firings out of your brass.

Funny you mention that. A nice factory SS fluted 6mm bbl just popped up for sale overnight on CGN with dies and brass.

depending on the action, the 243 often runs into problems being able to reach the lands at max COAL for the magazine. The 6 Rem is highly underrated, and with modern powders is simply fantastic in terms of speed with accuracy.

If you are definitely using a long action then a long-throated 6mm Remington will be better than the .243. Even better than the 6mm Remington is an improved version of the 6mm Remington such as the .240 PSP which is what I use. It has a 28 degree shoulder so feeding isn't compromised. Speed is around 3350 fps with the 90 grain and around 3200 fps with the 100 grain in a 24 inch barrel...not far from the .240 Weatherby. This is significantly better than what a .243 gets. But you should use an 8 twist barrel.

As long as you have the correct mag box, spring, follower combination I don't see why it would be an issue. My Win 70 243 is a long action and I don't have any issues. It was made before Win manufactured a short action.

Since you’re planning to use a 700, you might consider the Wyatt’s Outdoors extended magazine boxes. Recently I bought a used rifle in 6mm Rem with one installed, and it works fine. Not the least expensive option, particularly if you buy custom bottom metal that is better suited to the installation. But, in the end you’ll have a short action with the ability to seat bullets to achieve nearly a 3in OAL.
