It helps in keeping up with the characters status with the CIA. They're either trying to kill him or use him as an unofficial hit man. In order or not IMO they're a good read.
My first reaction to them was what a bunch of BS but he's as reasonable a character as Jack Reacher who kick's everybody's ass no matter who it is or how many. The Grey Man usually just shoots them.

Greaney is A Clancy Disciple, perhaps the best of them, though Cameron(?) has merit.
think of it like a movie with a prequel. you can go back for greater understanding.
