Put a recoil pad on everything that kicks. Stay away from anything that hurts to shoot, magnum rifles, 3 inch or larger 12 gauge.

Don't assume hunting opportunities and game numbers will remain the same or increase.
As a young hunter I assumed game populations would always be pretty much equal. Take advantage of the good conditions when you can because its not likely to always be "good."
Land ownership, land conditions, and game management practices will change. Not always for the better.
When you are young, time seems to be in abundance. Don't assume as you age you'll have more time.
Plan the big hunts now. Waiting until next year may not work out.

Talking to my 18-year old self:
1: By the time you’re 30, you will have killed three species of deer, two species of elk, and many coyotes and rockchucks at ranges from 25 yards to 400 yards......and you did it all with a 30-06 shooting 180gr Nosler Partitions. Just stick with that, because you’re about to waste a lot of time and money.
2: You’ll realize one day you wasted a lot of time and money on girls in college. Girls outside of college are way cheaper and way easier.
3: You’ll realize the hunting and fishing will never be as good as it was in college. Do more of that and less of #2.
4: Get your Lund when they were cheap and pay it off quick. You’ll get a bigger boat to go with it.
5: Your 85 Silverado was just fine. Even in 2000. Its 2021 and it’s still running fine.
6: Good optics will be more important than expensive rifles. I feel like we have a winner here. Dave

So many guys out there, many who have taken a lot of game and have nice heads on the wall, if presented with a nice medium aged 6 point white tail and a medium aged 8 point with a touch bigger rack, will always shoot the bigger buck, even if they arent going to mount it and are just going to throw the rack in the rat pile. They will take a nice 4x4 mulie out of a herd of does in the rut rather than a smaller 3x3 or 4x3 which would be better eating and leave it to breed.

I don't know a lot about whitetails, but over the hill mulies almost invariably have poor racks, often big forked horns. The racks degrade with age as the old bucks degrade with age. What happens to most whitetails? Curious.
