I know ALL ammo is in short supply, but putting that aside, what are thoughts on finding Mach 2 long term. Just say a nice Cooper for sale in Mach 2 and tempted to dig for $$. It comes with a few boxes of ammo, so that helps.

thanks

I don't think it will be a problem long term. Like everything else, who actually knows.
The 17M2 is a really fun round to shoot. I buy it when ever I see it on sale.
I'll bet that Cooper is very accurate. I would buy it, bulk up on the ammo and enjoy it.
If 17M2 becomes scarce for some reason, you can always have Cooper rebarrel it to any other rimfire.

I saw some ammo today, in a local gunshop, not much, about 10 boxes, but more of it than I've seen in quite awhile.

You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.

Hornady will keep it pumping for the whole of our lives. Just look at some of the other stuff they are cranking out. You can bet your ass they aren't going to bail on their own baby. If you need some ammo, my local shop has some that they'd probably be happy to ship.

I'm a 17HM2 fan and would consider buying a Cooper if the price was right. Keep an eye on the 17HM2 forum on RFC for ammo deals.

Hikerbum: You ask a great question - and "I" do not know the answer to it.
BUT.... I love the 17 Mach2 cartridge and what it does - and I love my newly acquired lone Cooper Rifle (223 Remington - MV-T Model).
I do own three heavy barrel Rifles in caliber 17 Mach2 so I really HOPE that 17 Mach2 ammo will be around for the next ten years (my expected life).
In fact I shot several feathered Varmints with one of my 17 Mach2's this week (a Kimber heavy barrel SVT with Leupold 6.5x20 scope) - this Rifle is VERY quiet and VERY accurate!
Another Rifle you may wish to consider, that I also own, is an Anschutz heavy barrel Model 1502 - it is also splendidly accurate.
Best of luck if you decide to go with the 17 Mach2.
Hold into the wind

The 17M2 is a hunting cartridge, not a plinker (in my book).

So buy the rifle and about 3,000 rounds and you are set for life (unless you shoot diggers...then you'll need more!).

First place I looked:

Eventually, I'd like to have one for hunting squirrels after the leaves drop. Think it'd be perfect for that. Wonder if I can make my T1X a switch barrel???

I had a cz452 that was a legit 100 yard squirrel rifle with very little holdover.

I know, a 22lr can do the same thing if the range is known and one can make the necessary adjustments. The 17hm2 just made it easy.

17 HM2 is the best cartridge for squirrel hunting I've ever used.

I would find what ammo it prefers then lay in a big supply when possible, then you are set for a long time for hunting.

The few I've owned have been as accurate as a similar 22lr with match ammo as well.

Agreed, 17HM2 is the best tree squirrel hunting cartridge yet to be introduced.

I've shot fox squirrels at 100+/- yards when they were eating waste corn in harvested fields. Sneak along the edge of the field, see a squirrel, sit down, extend the bi-pod legs, take aim, squeeze the trigger, dead squirrel. Repeat.

None of my 17HM2s will shoot the 15.5 grain NTX worth a damn, but they shoot most lots of 17 grain Hornady/CCI pretty well, but none shoot as good as the long discontinued Eley or Elay-made Remington. Eley 17HM2 ammo was match grade accurate for about the same price as mid-grade Eley .22 LR ammo. It was a sad day for 17HM2 shooters when Eley stopped making it.
