I'm in the market for a compact rangefinder. I've got older superheavy and powerful unit not really suited for hunting and my old Leica rangefinder was stolen from my vehicle. I know they've changed a lot in recent years with features and capability. I'm an old hand at spinning in a shooting solution with the turrents or using the reticle. So what's a solid unit these days?

I use one of the SIG2400’s. Pretty small and very accurate.

Leica. If you buy one you will never second guess your purchase. I can’t recommend them enough.

Leica is all you need to know. Not Chinese junk.

+3 on Leica. Mine is a 900, bought new from Doug at Cameraland a number of years ago. With a fresh battery, I get consistent ranging up to 900 yards. No extra ballistic gack, just range. It is very fast also.

What do you wanna bet the electronics in Leica, and all of them for that matter, are Chinese? Probably why they won't warranty them forever (except Vortex).
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

I have a Leica 800 yard that I bought from Doug probably 8 years ago, maybe more, so it isn’t the latest and greatest. It is still great. I also have a Sig (kilo maybe?) that I bought in 2019. I prefer it to the Leica, but primarily because it will range longer distances more reliably than the older Leica.
Don't speculate when you don't know, and don't second guess when you do.

Maybe a bit off topic but I have a Leupold RX-1000/TBR range finder that the display is so dim I cannot see it unless it is against a dark back ground. Leupold service is willing to give me a discount on a new unit but do not service them. I have not been able to find any good data on the unit. There appears to be a computer connection on the front but I can find no mention of it in the manual. And yes I have gone through the menu and set the display as bright as possible. (And yes I did replace the battery) Any suggestions? Thank you Pavementends

I originally purchased a Leica Rangemaster 1200 Scan years back. It could not range prairie dogs on a pdog hunt even at 300 yards. It had issues with terrain. I then purchased a Sig Kilo 2000. I went back out on a pdog hunt and it range everything. The difference was incredible....I'm in the Sig camp.

Leica is all you need to know. Not Chinese junk. Agree. I bought a Leica 600 when they first came out...worked flawlessly until I sold it after I traded for a pair of Leica 10x40 range finding binoculars. Later I sold them because they were just to big to suit me. I then bought one of the newer Leica 1200s that will easily fit in your shirt pocket....I once ranged a dove on a powerline wire at 156 yards. Leica has never disappointed me.

Been researching the GPO rangefinders and I like the specs on them but have never used any of their products. The proliferation of choices is a good and bad thing. It allows more competition and innovation and lowers price but it muddied waters some.

Leica. Mines a 2400 ( I think ). Correction, it's a 2700-B
Owned three others including the vaunted Sig 2000, have borrowed several others and tested them for a weekend up in the hills, the Leica is the most likely to actually laser a critter.
NONE of them are really great under less than ideal conditions--in other words, normal hunting situations.

FWIW, I just dumped my top of the line Leupold Golf rangefinder for the GPO Flagmaster. It's optically superior and gets a reading quicker and easier

Thanks. This is what one of your camera land employees told me as well. I'll think I'll try the GPO and see how it works with my new Primary Arms riflescope. The scope already has a rangefinding capability but I like redundancies.

I would add my recommendation for a Leupold. A little lighter on the price as a Leica but they make some great finders. RX-1600i, RX-1000i to name a few.

I've owned 3 different Leicas over the years, they are nice units but I could not get any of them to range a dall sheep no matter how close or far away I was from them. I ended up buying a Bushnell Scout 1k and I haven't had any issues ranging anything, dall sheep, rocks, whatever and it has some nice options for bowhunting and rifle hunting as well.
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

I have a 16 year old Leica that has never failed to range anything I pointed it at. Its spent it life banging around on my atv. Long seasons October thru march in all weather conditions. Still works flawlessly although the rubberized case is starting to look well used. When I replace it I will likely buy a Leica. Sig seems to get high marks whenever rangefinders are discussed so I will look at those as well.
Life can be rough on us dreamers.
