Haven't had them in ages, but they - along with parsnips, rutabagas, and Jerusalem artichokes - are excellent in stews or just roasted and buttered.
A house we moved into once had turnips growing in the back yard. They were almost as pungent as horseradish and although I could eat one raw it definitely watered my eyes.

I've read that before potatoes were discovered by Europeans, turnips were the starch vegetable of choice for dinner. I love the greens even more than the roots, though.

My brother plants turnips on our land in Alabama for the cattle he raises. When I'm there, it's a fight between me and the Florida crackers for turnips, cause I'll eat them raw right out of the ground until they're all gone.

Reminds me of the closing scene in Gone With The Wind, where Scarlett O'Hara is digging turnips from the ground and swears that she will never be hungry again.

I grew some for the deer last couple of years. I pulled one a couple weeks ago, and it tasted like dirt. I guess I got the ones deer like, not people. Anyway I have a truckload out back. Just planted some more along with Austrian peas, rape seed, and clover.

To anyone interested, you can take greens (collards, turnips, etc) that are improved by a frost and stick them in a freezer overnight and get pretty much the same results. I just set out my collards the first of this month and it will be December or January before we get much of a frost. Can't wait that long!
