We get the "Roll em up and stick em in" ones.
Nobody wears them.

Crazy here. All safety is left up to us.
Gloves, respirators, eye/ear, Tyvex suits.....
It's there, but Mommy let's you decide.
Not like other jobs I've worked.
Armored up or fired.
Unbelievable how many wear sneakers. And we get $250 to buy shoes.

It's not real loud, just bad enough that you should wear protection.
No one does.

But they go through lots of plugs.
Boxes of them every fall!😉

I like full muffs the best. Maybe not practical at times.

I usually get a set made every year at the ATA Grand. They were running about $60 this year.

It's a bit lax.

But most of us are men who grew up on tractors and running chainsaws.
We have a good safety record.
These things that provide protection from long term issues aren't
our biggest worries. We have rollers turning at hundreds of yard per
minute. With crush points within thousandth of an inch.
The possibility of horrible injuries is just an inch away.

Life ain't safe.
Unless you work in the HR dept.
Even then those paper cuts can be bad.
And the pinches from paper clips?
WOW!

Had a roofing crew, about 15 young dudes, at the recovery furnance (pulp and paper mill), scrapping off near 4 decades of various coating chit for a major recoat, dust flying thick. Their "leadman" had given them each a bandana to wear - all western bandit style... I got all up in his business, as appropriate, and handed out N95s. All thankful like Christmas, 'cept the"leadman". I' m fine, I have this, motioning to his banditito wear, he bitched.

Other times stubborn-ass millwrights would not voluntarily wear, so much as safety glasses breaking lines that had 11.7 pH residuals in them... None of us would benefit from anyone being hurt. Caustic hurts. There's a point you know it is ok or not, gotta plan for the worst until then.

Two simple examples why to not just leave it up to the individual, there's industry standard safety practices for a reason. That some are bullchit does not mean none are valid. But, wearing a hard hat out in an open field, that'd piss me off.

That ain't normal these days.
Many companies have a safety guy who earns more than the
producers. And he has to justify it.

I've worked jobs where your hard hat better be in your hand if it's not on your head. And I better not be off long.
If you walked through the fence without hard hat, ears,
and eyes (with side shields) on,
you left.

Hated that kinda crap.
But when I saw the relaxed nature of this place, it was a surprise.

The place I worked for, paid for a hearing test and those molded plugs just like yours. We had the test and got the new ear plugs every year.
I already had hearing loss from the military, but it never got worse after we started wearing those plugs. Think I still have at least 5 sets scattered around where I might need them.
The owner of the company was a cheap old fart, but he did take care of our hearing. I think OSHA helped him in his decisions somewhat!

I was hoping for pics of some nice gauges.

If I was 30 years younger I'd have some great ones. My earings will do for now, not sure I've got enough time left to really enjoy some fat gauges.

I had the unmitigated pleasure of being the collateral duty safety dude at one place I worked. Yippee, what fun that was.

Had one guy a few years older than I was, always find him running equipment in the shop, no eyes or ears on. Yell at him like you mentioned. He didn't GAF, already mostly deaf from being an armorer in Nam and testing weapons all the time he said.

The rest of the crew was as bad or worse. Carrying and spilling open containers of formaldehyde, with another nasty substance dissolved in it, on themselves, as in head to toe.

The list goes on. And on. And on.

Temp job as a firewatch on a petroleum pipeline and tankfarm project. Every morning kicked off with the tailgate safety meeting. Few of us woul keep watch on this tank welder. Sure as clockwork he'd pull an unwrapped donut from his dirty assed overall pocket and eat it just happy as can be. That's the sort of thing to each his own.....

We carry knives at work, always cutting coated sheet goods.
One old guy worked with phenolic coated fiberglass, some had
an oil/asphalt coating. His knife was black with it.

At lunchtime, he would use that knife to spread ketchup on a sandwich,
Or to cut his food!

His sidegig was a Poop Truck.
He worked second, and often came to work driving that truck.
And he didn't bath often either.

If we did a potluck meal before a holiday or retirement,
guys would stand at the door to see the dish he brought
food in. Then word would go around,
"Don't eat the xXxX in the green Tupperware"!

He always took most of his food home, even if every other dish
as empty. Kinda felt bad about that.
But i still didnt eat from the green Tupperware!
