Have you looked into aftermarket cats?

Have any friends with a welder and torch?
Someone not in business, but a buddy who would help you
for a case of beer or a gift certificate?

Probably wouldn't be hard to fab some kind of shield to protect the
pipes and the hangers. Ideally, you buy some hardenable steel from
Granger or Fastenall. Get it to shape harden the most likely to be cut
spots.

You can't make it theft proof.
But when they see thicker steel protecting the thin stuff,
And if the saw just won't cut.
They aren't going to keep going.

They very well might damage something else.

Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

Recyclers are the ones buying most of them They fetch about $150. There is a way to shut this crap down by placing some restrictions on recyclers.

This happened a lot in 2007-8
In california it is technically illegal to sell used exhaust parts but it is still done...
You could probably get a stainless catback system from J.C. whitney for less.
I picked up a new stainless cat back and muffler off craugskist once for something like $150...

We ( people in this country/society) continually
make excuses/ justifications for low life good
for nothing thieves. Well that's my son/daughter/
nephew/ best friend/ long time friend, and I
love them/ care for them etc. etc. etc.

IMO I should really be able to leave anything
laying on the front porch or anywhere else,
and have it still sitting there as I left it when
I return. I don't blame someone and point
fingers at someone if they want to spend
their own money on a nice vehicle or clothing

their money on things then don't have money to
buy food, that's their problem too
But it's their stuff and others shouldn't diddle

don't belong to them

There's a drughead right across from here
that needs to be back in prison where he's
been to several times. After his last release,
he went right back to getting high and stealing
and making bastard babies and living as a
professional bum and daylong sleeper.
Grandma and his family make excuses and
enable him and blame dope and the county
gubmint for his uselessness. He'd have to
have intensive training to get work as a
door stop. The sad part is that there's many
thousands just like him

That's typical government creating a problem and pretending to provide a solution. We need less tax for less police and fewer laws preventing us from handling our own business. Seriously. Cops can't do all the things people ask them to do no matter how much money you throw at them.

And if they're just going to shoot people we may as well do it ourselves and save the tax.

Or the cops should make it known that they are going to put as much effort into investigating shootings of thieves as they put into investigating thefts. That should temper a thief's enthusiasm.

They hit us at work, about 35 were stolen. They still haven’t repaired all of them. They had to rent vehicles so the guys would have something to drive.

The problem here was that the jail had such restrictive intake policies because of COVID that it wasn't taking property crime thieves. The police kept dealing with the same people over and over again because the thieves thought they were untouchable. The police finally cut a deal with a county jail 70 miles up the highway with a less restrictive COVID policy and started transporting arrestees there.

A cat is worth $400 as scrap. In CA you can steal up to $900 without fear of arrest. You can argue that replacing the cat will cost $1000 but you know any good lawyer will get it valued as scrap, not replacement cost.

Are they that heavy a scrap or is there something special about them?

Platinum. I believe is what is in them.

Aftermarket cats are sometimes not recognized by the vehicles computer. I tried an after market cat on a titan, it didn’t take.

That sucks about Texas and their annual vehicle inspections. If the check engine light is on, you can’t get an inspection. No inspection, no current tags….

In my '04 van, the light's been on for 2 years. It's the front O2 sensor. It's in an impossible place and it has to be on a hoist to get at it. It costs $100 in labor to get it replaced. It's just a beater run around car so I haven't bothered to get it fixed.

Colorado adopts California law so you cannot get a non compliant cat. No one will ship to Colorado.
I would like to let the jack down on a thief but they target high clearance trucks. Running over his legs would be second.
The way they do things maybe they can outlaw battery saws. After all there is a law against having starter fluid and corelle bakeware together. ( meth)

My old f150 has all the exhaust welded on and it is rusty.

Watch and wait. When he gets it cut off, shoot him in the knee with a .22 short and watch him try to run away. Laugh your azz off, and shoot him in the other knee! Retrieve converter, drive a few blocks away, wire it into place and set up another ambush.

Not an option on a lot of newer vehicles. If it has a pre and post O2 sensor (closed loop) the vehicle may not run correctly without the catalyst. If it just has the pre-cat sensor, throw in a pipe and rock on. I'd certainly look at aftermarket options.

I'm told they steal them in Cedar Rapids as well.
