I'm running Vortex Razor 3-15x42s. I don't mind SFP on my elk rifles, because if I'm going to be dialing, the targets far enough away that I'll be on 15 power anyway.

That Athlon Stick talked about tweaked my interest and I thought if i was a reliable dialer it could go on my Tikka T3X Superlite 6.5 Creed, which currently wears a SWFA 3-9x42 HD. I bought the set up so me and the grandkids could learn the mil system at the range and do some practice out to 800 yards. Thinking if we nail that down a 500 yard shot would be much easier.
I have done all my killing with a second focal plane scope, but have never shot much over 400 yards and never felt the need to. My hunting is in timber for moose and occasionally in the open for caribou.
I have and aversion to scopes weighing over 20 ounces on my hunting rifles. But, it seems as though most reliable scopes are over 20 ounces. I have Leupold VXIIIi 3.5-10x40 with the B&C reticle. That reticle combined with the 168 TTSX or 175 grain Barnes LRX out of my 30-06 has worked ok out to 500 yards at the range.
The Athlon 2-12x42 FFP has my interest for use on the 6.5 Creed, but it is also close to 25 ounces I think. For longer then I been alive hunters have been slaying critters with second focal plane scopes. So they must work, but I also think once some one has learned the mil system on a first focal plane scope they would probably stick with it.
Does any one make a reliable light weight first focal plane scope that is under 22 ounces?

AK, your 3x9 SS is about the top of the heap under 22 ounces. I just put a Trijicon 3x18 on my Mashburn but that’s 24 ounces I believe. It’s a beautiful scope though. Great optics and dials along with a zero stop.
I might need to try the Athlon for grins. Seems like Stick and a few others are wearing them out and I wanna get one to kick tires.
You’re right though. A good shooter can do alot with a little but a FFP with a good mil reticle is like cheating In my opinion.
