Don't over think it just use some empty brass cases and rotate them ocassionally so that the firing pin hits them a different spot.

You can get a pack of 100 yellow screw anchors for about $3. They are tapered, and last for several hits, extract and eject just fine.
The main problem with using empty cases is that they have no bullet or taper, so they are a PITA to fit into the chamber, especially with guns with a small port like most semiautos.
BTDT. The plastic anchors work much better.

So none of the snap caps offer much more than a spent case do due to lack of durability?

So none of the snap caps offer much more than a spent case do due to lack of durability? I have spent the money on snap caps and they get chewed up pretty quick. For the money I don't think they are worth it. I practice with empty cases but do not use them for storage. The drywall anchors are the cheapest and best solution.

An old Gunsmith, who is no longer with us, taught me to put a dab of Silicone on my Snap Caps, and, they've lasted for yrs!
Picture a small amount, about an 1/8 inch thick, evenly spread over the base, of the shell.

Caution: Rimfire dummy rounds are not the same as snap caps. I had some blue aluminum dummies where the package clearly warned not to use them as snap caps. Being aluminum, the rims wouldn't hold up. It's pretty hard to make a true rimfire snap cap. The cheap disposable drywall anchors do everything except feed through a magazine like a cartridge. Can't have it all.
