Years back visiting a guy's cabin with my springer spaniel got me a hundred dollar stomach pumping bill because the dog found the mice poison. It happened again a couple weeks back when the wife's son's pup ate a d-Con bait out in the garage. It probably happens enough so that dog owners should be more prepared to deal with it right away. We called a vet immediately and he said to give the dog hydrogen peroxide a few of times to induce vomiting until all the green d-Con color was gone. Hunting dogs get poked with sticks and get stuff in their eyes, so carrying along some antiseptic and eye wash water might be a prudent thing to bring along.

I’ve known that for 30 years

But I’m in the exterminating business, dogs on rare occasions will get ahold of some di-blox or diphacinone. Which is an anti/coagulant.
Big squeezie bottle of peroxide and B A R FFF!!! They will upchuck it.
If it goes undetected....the animal will need a shot of Vitamin K

However, God help you if you use toss packs of Tomcat or any brand containing Bromethalin. Unless youre fast with the peroxide like you see them swallow it.
It makes their brain stem swell.
An intervention sometimes of corticosteroids might help. But usually its a bad outcome.

I set my D-con out in plastic jars (Macadamian Nut Clusters from Costco if you must know), with a mouse hole in the lid.so the dogs can't get at it. Theoretically the little bastids go back in their nests to die and the dogs do not eat them either.

My old walker hound got some. Hydrogen peroxide til the foam came up white.
He didn’t seem to enjoy it. [bleep] guts were gurgling.

Yes. Once had a dog that either ate the poison or a perhaps a dead rodent. Took a transfusion to bring her back from deaths door.

My dog must be smart because I add some to his bowl every day and he won’t touch it.

We call them mouse hotels.

That's how we put out our poison.

I knew of a dog up in Alaska that loved rat poison. Whenever it was set out he’d jump up on the work bench and chow it down. Never needed medical intervention and lived a full life. 🤢

My lab got into it. It took a transfusion and Vitamin K to save her life at the ER vet.

That bill was not cheap...

I use the Tomcat bait stations oitside for voles and mice.
Dog can get into them, I struggle.

Have found a few dead ones, dog is too spoiled to eat them.

Our Springer swallowed a tomcat block whole, and the vet poured the activated charcoal to her. She finally chucked it up and seems to be OK. I'm thinking it's good she inhales her food instead of chewing on it.

Tossing rat poison over the fence is a known method of killing someone’s dogs around here. Plus poisoned rodents often die in the walls stinking up the place.

I use sticky traps or snap traps only.
