the thread on quietly closing a bcg got me thinking... I have been using a .22 conversion quite a bit and when I checked mine it did not move as freely as it should.. note also I had just brushed the lugs out with the FA down an a good bit of the partially unburned flakes may have fallen in.. but you never need it until you really need it. so when was the last time you checked yours?

Better question might be, when was the last time you ever really needed and used the forward assist?

The forward assist is a solution in search of a problem.
Stoner didn’t think it was needed, and the carve out in the BCG is so you can use your thumb to seat a round that’s not fully seated.
Mine are looked open as nuisance, and no, I don’t oil them.

They are perfectly useful for guys that hunt with them, and don’t like to carry the gun around with one in the chamber. It’s easy to pull the charging handle all the way back, and let the bolt slam forward, when NOISE is not an issue (p-dogs, targets, heat of battle??). However, if you’re HUNTING, and want to QUIETLY chamber a round, the forward assist often comes in handy to fully close the bolt. Maybe some of you only hunt game that can’t hear. Guess I’m in the minority...

I either buy slick sides or plug the FA, having to mortar an AR, especially with a live round stuck and bolt not in battery is something I don't care for.
Once was enough for me.
So never after I removed the one mentioned above, they cause more issues than they cure for the majority of the people who have an AR.

I only hunt coyotes and rabbits w/ my AR and a round is chambered when I leave the truck. I hunt all the way to and from the stand and walk w/ the pistol grip in my hand and the safety on. The FA was thought up by the good idea fairy.
