If "indigenous people" means Indians, consider this. Those American Indians were still in the stone age when the rest of the known world was living in the Industrial age. They completely missed the Bronze age and the Iron Age. They murdered each other and killed off their major food and construction material source then got pissed off at people wanting to move onto land they only migrated through.
Columbus was the first government sponsored expedition—there were Basque fishermen who knew about Newfoundland in the 1450’s. And— by about 1200AD Polynesians had already settled every island in the Pacific with fresh water. Did that with crab-claw sailed pontoon boats without a compass.
