I currently have a Burris 3-9 on my AR. I was contemplating taking it off and swapping it out for more of a tactical scope. I hear that Vortex makes good scopes for ARs. Anyone have any suggestions?

What do you consider a tactical scope? It really depends on your intended use.

Are you looking for true 1x at the low end? There are quite a few nice 1-4x and 1-6x scopes available that have true 1x. I like my Vortex Razor 1-6x and my Steiner 1-4x. These scopes are good for distances from 3 feet to 300+ yards.

Or, if you're looking for longer range shooting, then you would be looking at higher powered scopes that dial consistently or have good BDC reticles. Again, there are a bunch of those available from different makers at different price points and these are discussed exhaustively on this forum in other threads.

Bingo. A lot of guys love Vortex, but I've seen too many problems with them. If the OP wants an "AR specific" scope, maybe he should consider a Burris AR specific scope. AR556, AR762 and the like are very good rifle scopes. Even the Burris MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) isn't too bad, but not nearly as good as the AR556 4.5-14x42. Then there is primary arms that seem to be popular for AR rifles as well. A lot of good choices out there.

This place ain't your huckleberry for AR optics advice, or any AR advice, really.

In order to get useful responses you need to give us more to go on. Budget, use, approx power range you want, etc...

Hard to recommend something without knowing intended uses.

But something like the Trigicon Huron or Ascent check a lot of boxes for not too much money. Around 450$

If you don't mind putting the $ in it, I really like the NX8 1-8 for AR use.

For detailed discussions of scopes for competition AR use (very similar to "tactical") the rifle section of Brian Enos forums is good and has knowledgeable posters. I also like M4carbine.net.

I would also say that if you're talking about use inside a hundred yards, a good red dot works well. You can always add a 3x magnifier to the red dot that you can use when needed.

Look at the Steiner P4Xi 1-4x24 which is absolutely a true 1x

I have one of these on an AR I shoot in competition. It's a good scope and performs well.

Konus 1.5-6 with circle dot for calling coyotes.

I use a Vortex Viper PST 1-4X in my AR15 competition Service Rifle.
That Steiner that Doug posted previously is good-to-go also.

If you are going the low power variable optic route, take a look at the Primary Arms 1-8 ACSS. They have 5.56 BDC and ranging built in to the reticles. They have them in SFP, FFP and Platinum version made in Japan with a 34 mm tube. I have several of the 1-8 SFPs on mine and like them a lot. Their reticles are very well designed.

I settled on the SWFA 1-6 HD and I am absolutely satisfied with my choice. Love the reticle. On 1x, the circle is great for in your face stuff and on 6x, the circle is not visible at all and the center portion is a very good long range reticle. The adjustments track correctly. The glass is very good. The illumination is very well done. Extremely satisfied with this scope.

Great scope, other than the ridiculous weight.

I put a Fullfield TAC30 1-4x24 on my sons AR around eight years ago. It’s given good service.

The Razors are very good. Everything else Vortex isn’t worth the hassle of using their great warranty, and you will.

The Steiners were a steal at $450ish, aren’t a bad deal at around $600ish. Paying $800 for one is crazy.

If you don’t need illumination I’d go Huron / Ascent for $400ish. I think the same with illumination in the Credo is $650ish for a 1-4.

The Illuminated Credo 1-6 is a great deal at $800. I’d get the dot / bdc reticle.

I'd have to agree about the Steiner prices, they've really gone up. I think I got mine for around $500 and I thought it was a good deal.

Agreed on the Huron/Ascent line from Trigicon.

I have them both. The Huron on a Ruger MPR and the Ascent on a 6920. I've been impressed by both of them.

Isn't the eye relief a little on the short side for the Trijicons?

I looked at one at LGS yesterday and it seemed so.

My guess is that 2 of the aforementioned scopes (as in the mentioned Huron/Ascent lines) would be plural, and possibly even spelled Trijicons?

99% of us really wouldn’t worry about it. But it’s obvious how easily triggered the dipschitt’s are. Or is it D I P S H I T?

I bought the Primary Arms 4x14x44mm ACSS HUD for my 308AR. Dang cool scope for the money and I can range anything out to 600 yards.

I have an ACSS HUD on my Tikka CTR 308. It have the GLX 4-16. Primary Arms gives lot of value since there is no middle man.

Really need to know your uses for the gun, desired magnification, and price range.

If price is no object, a vortex razor is the way to go. The Steiner costs the same now and you get more from the vortex.

The swfa is nice but heavy as all hell.

Avoid vortex strike eagle like the plague, but a primary arms 1-6 or 1-8 is a good deal for a budget scope.

I currently run a Burris rt6 1-6 on a 20" ar for 3 gun comps and love it.

You need to define what you intend to use the gun for as well as the budget.
