Just wanted to see if anyone had a good accurate load for a 270 win shooting a 130 SST. My plan is to use IMR4350 since that seems to work good for alot of people and it's what I've got. Thanks for any and all help.

It's quite likely it will shoot well with 55 grains. Work up of course, but 55 and a 130 is a classic.

That is a commonly recommended load for all 130's. I gave it a shot and found a sweet spot a mere half a grain away. Betting if you load to three different depths one of them will be pretty spot on.

I would stick to the plan and stick to behind the shoulders. That bullet is a bomb. It kills whitetails in their tracks but a rapid expander for sure.

Partagas:

Have you tried the 130SST lately? MD says the newer SST perform pretty much like the standard Hornady Interlock. Not arguing, just asking. Thanks

I haven't used the 130 .277" version, but the 95 grain out of a 243 has been a very good deer bullet at my camp for a number of years.

southtexas, no I have not tried the new one, it was shortly after they came out that I tried them. At least 15 and probably closer to 20 years ago. They were too explosive for my taste then so I had moved on and remained a little leary.

SST-140 & 150g is a real plus, 130g is a bomb, lung shots only....on the order of a 300 Win mag with a 150g

I used the 130 SST to kill a west Texas muley several years ago. Performed just like a ballistic tip and left a blood trail a blind man could follow. Damnedest bloodiest mess I've ever seen, but the deer was dead.

My load was 55.0 grains of IMR 4350/CCI 200 and Winchester brass out of a Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker.

The lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part!

Slow the 130 SST down to below 2700 fps impact velocity and you will be fine.

I load mine with 53 gr H4350. Very accurate (sub 1/2 MOA) and around 2900 fps MV out of my 20” BAR.

I’m shooting 140 SST at 3030 or 3050 FPS using Hunter.
It’s been a great range ammo out to 600 yards as well as deer if I want to .
But I use ttsx for hunting for reasons mentioned above.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I shot 5 deer with the 130gr SST in my 270win during the 2012 to 2014 seasons. I stoked them with 57gr of IMR4831 and a Fed210LR primer. I killed every deer dead, but honestly they didn't put holes as big as a 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I didn't find the SST to be as destructive as I had heard they were. I have since sold the 270win so I haven't used them since then.

I’ve killed whitetails with 139 gr. SST’s in my .280 Remington with no problem. The last one I killed was a doe that got tangled up in a fence. When the bully hit her she got untangled really quick. I almost did. It find her as there was no blood trail.

SST's have treated me well as long as they hit game below 3000fps. Most I had come apart where close range and loaded on the top end. Further distances didn't have any issues beyond finding the core in the shoulder and jacket in the hide.

Yeah part of my problem was I was using them in a 270 weatherby as well as the standard. 3500 fps was a bit much.

I killed a buck in northern Kansas last year with my 270 Winchester using 130 grain Hornady SST at 511 yards measured with a Leica rangefinder. Buck ran about 8 yards and fell over dead. Found an empty copper jacket (no lead core) on the far side under the skin. Lungs looked shredded. I was very impressed with the bullet at that range, and it is now my go to bullet in my 270 Winchester M-70.
Using RL-22 and Winchester cases. Need to check the load but muzzle velocity average is at 3073 fps.I will check my notes but I am pretty sure that is what I have plugged in my Ballistics AE app.
