One of my favorite quotes of all time came from General Powell. "Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers..." What makes that truly remarkable is that it came from a government employee. Most government agencies require senior leadership to take a "How to Complicate Simple Schidt" course.
I had a buddy who was a neighbor of his in DC. He said Powell was a duplicitous bastard that was overly impressed with his own intellect. If he thought of it, it was a good idea. If he didn't think of it or found some way to appropriate the idea as his own, it must be crap. He was also very quick to put you in your place if he thought you were below his station and was prone to ignoring you at a party or turning his back and walking away. My friend was a conservative economics and foreign policy wonk. He taught Reganomics at the University of Moscow.

My buddy was a Supply-Side Economist with a Ph.D. and fought for his thesis back in the '50s. This made him about as old-school Conservative as you get. His assessment was that Powell was not a Liberal. Rather, he was a rank opportunist and rolled whichever way got him the most juice. He said most of D.C. was filled with these critters. Powell was just better at playing the game.
Read years ago a layout of the achievements/degrees/training etc. many in the military had earned - only to be passed over by CP - thanks to Affirmative Action .

If you ever had doubts about Faux news political lean, the worship of the General Colon today is nauseating. They need not trash him on his passing, but they need not make him out to be a hero warrior either. A few words of condolence to his family would have sufficed. And imagine my surprise, Biden and he were 'dear friends'. Powell wore many hats, politician, statesman, shill for the military industrial complex etc...but not warrior.

Being black he Wass given a big advantage playing the game. He was a mediocre C student but his affirmative action race card helped him succeed
