You guys that have equipment, tractors ,bobcats , bull dozers and the like that you leave on job sites, who makes the best, most affordable trackers so that you can get your stuff back ? Insurance is one thing but that can take time and jumping through hoops to get settled , I just want to know where my stuff is when it comes up missing. Who and what makes do you count on ? And what's the annual cost?

Well thank for the info, I didn't wanna waste a bunch of money, only to find out that the range was limited and cold weather killed the batteries.

Obviously one would have to be connected to a continuous power source. Otherwise the battery would cave in short order. GPS tracking programs/apps run about a minimum of $50 a month, unless you have a fleet of tracking devises. If you're looking for a good deal on one, I'd suggest checking used car lots that "tote the note" They have them on all the cars sold to "iffy" high-risk buyers.

Could you just get a cheap phone and hide it on the machine then use a "track my phone" app?

Something like this?
