I know about the O ring on the second variation 760 and 7600s but a friend has an old (first) variation of the 760 that rattles like crazy. No O ring on that model I do not think. Anybody know how to stop the rattle on those original model 760s? Thanks

I have had an issue with some of my earlier 760's rattle and no O ring groove. I used a small triangle file to make a groove in the appropriate spot, then deepened and rounded it with a 1/8" round file until the O ring would fit into the action bar assembly. I started by putting a wrap of tape around the action tube to keep the file on course.

My old 1955 760 is pretty quiet, it came to me with a plastic dust cover over the bolt area, that may help keep it quiet, original metal cover was included in an old oily yellow envelope, dont know about an o ring on the slide.

The rattle comes from a metal tube inside a metal tube (forend) wasn’t until 1960 when Remington was reconfiguring the rifle forend for the Carbine they were working on that someone discovered a .15 cent O ring made it quieter. Proper sized O rings can be found at a hardware or plumbing store for 3 for a buck or $6.00 for a gun shop one.

A 760 was my only WI deer gun for most of my life. About 1987 I traded it for a bolt action and should have earlier, fuquing 760 rattletraps.

Mines a '63 ADL and its not bad.
Guess when it starts clanking will investigate.

I've got about 15 760's ranging from one that you'll probably never see- a .222Rem made in a special run of 200 in 1966 for the Running Deer Matches, two x.280, 270,308,30-06 Carbines and up to .35Whelen rifles. I blame my Dad as the first rifle I remember was the old Model 14/32Rem that was carrried on all types of farm equipment and never missed a beat.
