I built one on a short action Model 70, turned out very nice. I think the 103 gr ELDX would be just about perfect.

I have a .270WSM and a .240 PSP which is similar to the 6mm AI, (but 28 degree shoulder on an improved 6mm Remington case) in a Model 70 and get 3350 fps with 90g Scirocco out of a 9 twist 24 1/4" barrel. The biggest problem is the speed. Sometimes your shots will be close, such as 150 yards and sometimes 350 yards. You need a projectile that is either monolithic or bonded so that it will be tough enough to handle the closer shots, yet work ok at the longer shots. I wish I had got an 8 twist barrel so that I could try the 90 grain GMX and see how the 100 grain Sierra TGK (neither bonded nor monolithic) does at around 3200 fps. Also, most of the tougher bullets especially once you get past 90 grain do not have great b.c's which means more wind drift and drop for the very long shots.

New barrel will ship tomorrow.

Tempted to order some 69gr Hammers, heard they will hold up at really high speeds. Not much more expensive than Barnes.

I already have dies and a couple hundred fire formed brass due to a slow twist varmint rifle that is long gone! Is the 6mm enough at those ranges if I don’t make a perfect shot or should I stick with the 270WSM that gives me a headache at the range after a few shots?

If you are going to a long action, just get a 25-06. There isn't a deer alive that can't be dropped at 4-500 yards with a 257 100-120gr bullet, or use a Barnes 80gr TTSX,

But then he would be shooting a 25/06 not a 6mmRem AI! :>)

A 6mmAI will be milder to shoot in terms of recoil than a bigger bore, but you still need good shot placement. The report of a large capacity 6mm case is very loud and this alone can cause a flinch, even if the recoil is mild. A 24" barrel is the absolute minimum I would consider. You may be able to get better shot placement with the 6mmAI if a .270WSM gives you a headache after a few shots. If you don't think you can get good shot placement with a fast 6mm, then the deer is too far away. A genuine 350-400 yards is a long shot and most hunters would have trouble consistently ensuring good shot placement at that distance. Where a fast 6mm shines is shooting precisely at small deer such as Coues deer when they are partially covered by vegetation and not having to worry about compensating for trajectory such as the 200-300 yard shots. For deer around 200lb or bigger, I'd prefer the .270WSM whether they are close or some distance away. Even then, you still need good shot placement.

I'd not do another 6mm unless I was using a 7-7.5" twist. The bullets keep getting longer.

Well, I’ve got more bone on the wall via 6ai than all the naysayers put together…. Build one and be healed… 👍

Mine should be getting done this weekend.

Wonder if R26 would be too slow for 90s?
