I returned to the lobby after finishing my appointment, and witnessed my wife involved in a hunting rifle conversation with the young lady receptionist.

It seems the young lady is wanting to step up a bit from her .270 Win. to something larger for her hunting rifle. My wife was extolling the virtues of the .338 WM. I guess the lady will be coming to the house to run a few rounds through my wife’s rifle, to see what it is like.

Maybe not “only in Wyoming”, but probably not an everyday conversation in many dentist offices! memtb

Is the young lady good looking?

Obey lawful commands. Video interactions. Hold bad cops accountable. Problem solved.

She’s a fairly experienced shooter. My wife will instruct/assist her with proper form and will shoot first to give the young lady an idea of the recoil. My wife went from a 270 Win to the .338 WM.....it took her about a year to get comfortable with it. It’s been her only hunting rifle since 1996. It’s a matter of want to....if you want to, you can probably do it! If your scared of it, you will likely fail.....No matter the age or the gender! memtb

What is she hunting that she doesn't think a 270 will handle? (If she wants a 338 more power to her, just curious why.)

Several of her elk required a second shot...though hit well! She also may have plans for other large, big game! Many people cannot or refuse to see that the benefits of the 338 WM far outweigh the negatives! If the hunter is not recoil sensitive.....the .338 WM is a darn good “all around” big game cartridge. Until the shooter tries the cartridge.....they will never know if they can become comfortable with it! Is it “necessary” for most big game hunting....No! But, it’s certainly not a detriment either.....provided the shooter is proficient with it! memtb

I'm young enough to be Pharmseller's grandson. What is her phone #? ha ha... On a serious note, why does she want a bigger cartridge than her 270w? Has she had poor performance with the wrong bullet or what? By the way, I'm taking something smaller to the forest tomorrow morning...

Don't tell grandpa though, he will get a big head...

What I'm hearing is she needed a 280 instead of a 270 😇😂

BSA, when we have time to have a better conversation with her......bullet types/weights, ect for the 270 Win. will be discussed. If her future plans include game larger than elk.....I think that the .338 WM is a legitimate contender for an all around cartridge! If she’s not a “rifle looney”, meaning “of sound mind”......she just may become the highly ridiculed “one gun hunter”! 😉 memtb

I agree with you on the performance of the 338wm. It is undeniable. The only reason I don't take mine out elk hunting 100% of the time is because that would be boring. I've used 30-06, 300wm, 300WSM, 338wm, and 9.3x62 as of now. I want to give the 7mm08 a try with Barnes bullets this year. Or if I don't see an elk the first couple days, I'll switch to something else I haven't used. Or I'll just pull ol tried and true 338wm out of the safe. Its always ready to go..

Load her some of the Hammers, Accubonds, TTSXs, Partitions. I’d bet a dollar with great bullets she would be much more happier on elk.

I love the 338 myself but great bullets in a 270 make it a whole nother animal in my book.

Sounds like a nice lady, cool to see her interested.

At one point I had a 30-338 and will say it was not bad to shoot. I know it was only pushing a 180 bullet vs heavier stuff that the 338 normally uses but it was not bad.

We'll look forward to the rest of the story. Actually some smaller stature people can manage recoil more easily than a larger person that isn't going to roll with the punch as easily. Maybe have her try a .338 WM standing up instead of leaning into it at a bench. Then there is the matter of rifle weight. I wouldn't mind a 7.5# .270, but a 7.5# .338 WM would get one's attention in the recoil department. I carried my own rifle out west and I didn't want a real heavy rifle and a woman probably won't either. Then there is a matter of what you can shoot well. Nobody talks about a last instant flinch from a too large a cartridge. Paper ballistics are one thing, being able to accurately place a shot with a magnum is another. Our camp had .270, .30-06, 7mm RM, .300 WM and .338 WM elk all on the same meat pole. Placement beats power from what I've seen. Lots of guys are flinching during our range's sight in days just using '06's.

Read years ago (and I don't doubt it) that for most people a 7mm Mag is about the top end of what they can shoot accurately as far as recoil goes.
I have seen first hand people that need to stick with a 243 and some that could take what ever you hand them.
Placement over displacement any day.

beretzs, We have loaded 140 TSX’s for our daughter’s 270. She’s taken some game with it, but is not a very sincere hunter! The 270 is all she wants in the recoil department! Except for my handgun and my 45-70.......Barnes’ bullets are the only bullet loaded for hunting in my reloading room! I have standards! 😁

Buttstock: I think I’ll take a “hard pass” on that! 😉

Windfall, She will shoot from standing and probably from off of the shooting sticks. Shooting from the bench will be her call!

Pullit, My wife’s rifle weighs-in at 9# even .....scoped, loaded, and slung. The rifle wears a Pachmyar Decelerator, she will be using a PAST Recoil Shield, and the rifle has been cut down for a proper fit for my wife. The young lady and my wife are of similar stature. So, the rifle should fit pretty well.....at least well enough to give her an idea if this is something she wants to pursue!

I don’t doubt the 7mag threshold......however, not all shooters are created equal. My wife shoots her rifle remarkably well....but, hates to shoot it from the bench. The bench is used only for proving the zero prior to big game hunting. The other shooting, though limited, is from field positions! I don’t think that it’s required to shoot hundreds of rounds/year to be proficient.....there are other rifles for that purpose!
