well i have hadcustoms buit by a few of these smiths listed, others by some quality smiths since retired.but this is over a 30 year period.several on trued up remingtons, then added with some custom actions also.now when it comes to winchesters i know for sure that d'arcy and gene have built some wonderful functional and reliable rifles.for what my budget allows i have 2 penrod built masterpieces,in accuracy looks detail balance and functional reliability in any condition they have encountered.they are exceptional.to answer original ?.best is hard to say.i can think of 25 off the top of my head that are excellent with remingtons and custom actions.

Yup. Charlie is the man. I also blame him to make me stop building new rifles. Lost interest and no need to. Charlie built me my go to rifle back in '04. Been shooting the same ragged one hole for 17 years. Went from 72 gr RL 22 180 gr TSX for 12 or so years to 74.5 gr RL 22 180 gr TTSX 5 or so years ago. Same ragged hole...... And even with a hot barrel after sighting in a new scope in 98* decided to pop a couple at 200 y to check the zero.

Top pic of your target looks just like my .280Rem Charlie made for me in ‘00! Still doing same.

Funny story about that build. I called Charlie up and said I’d like for him to use 26” Krieger barrel after all that’s what everyone on the Internet forums say is the best. There was a pause. Then in a calm drawl he said “yup. I can do that, but I’ve had some real good success using Lila barrels and 24” in a 300 (Win).” Begrudgingly I said ok....... A couple-three years later I got rid of a pair of G33-40 actions, 4 or so Pre War Mod 70 donors and a pair of Pre War custom rifles. No need to build nor want to take anything else hunting. I ’d like to say I wish I needed to build another rifle but I don’t. The new Echols action has me very interested but I don’t need another rifle. Sisk 300 Win in Zimbabwe 9/15/2018

Shooting groups is no measure of “best”. An old beat up pickup will get me to the grocery store but driving an R8 there, well that is an experience.
Interesting. I too was thinking skip the custom and go Blaser. It took me awhile to get used to them, and I still like custom rifles, but so many customs disappoint. Every R8 I’ve owned has been super accurate and with great function. They are a consistent product. Blasers are hard to beat!

I think he means an Audi R8 I thought this was a rifle thread? Regardless, that’s definitely inferior to a Blaser. One of those almost killed my friend at a track day at either Laguna Seca or Willow Springs (can’t remember which) because of a brake failure, which a few years later was the subject of an Audi recall. Took the jaws of life to get him out. Back to rifles, I can’t say I ever had a custom I was 100 percent pleased with other than a couple my dad built for me.

Jim Borden built 2 rifles for me. STUPID accurate. I talked to him about building a semi heavy rifle not meant to walk up mountains with and he said he could build a lightweight that shot just as well…. I believe him.

I would not buy a package "custom" rifle. I would buy the parts I want, and have a real smith build it for me at my specs. +1 DF
