I found a remington 783 yesterday in 270 for $279, with a leupold scope mounted that I can pull and sell for $225, so the rifle was dang near free. I have wanted a 783 because they can take savage barrels and I like the solid top action, mainly just to tinker with the gun and maybe set it up for a kid. Well there must have been a reason it was so cheap. I didn't notice it, but it appears that the ejector actually broke and siezed in the recess. the roll pin was so stuck I had to drill out the roll pin to finally get what remained of the ejector out. Only problem is finding another one looks like its going to be a big problem. it sounds like the marlin XS and XL 7 have many of the same parts. but is there any other ejectors from other guns that might work?

I was thinking that 783 parts would be easy to find, but I just did a quick google search, and all im finding are scope bases and triggers

Roll pins don't "stick" if you use the right punch.

yeah well, a 1/16" punch is all that was available locally. I even tried using a drill bit as a punch that was the right size. These should not be that tuff to remove. I think the gun had and "event" that I don't know about that caused the issues.

Midwestgunworks shows they are sold out of 783 ejectors and extractors. I think you should find the parts you need with a little patience

yeah I saw that. the spring and roll pin should not be hard to source somewhere else. I suppose if worse came to worse I could probably make and ejector out of something else.

its possible that Savage parts might work also, as the Marlin X series copies them....

Was it in two pieces when you got it out? The ejector.

You can make a new one with a drill bit and a Dremel tool. Mike the diameter of the pin

Ok
These bolt heads are from a 783 308 (dark head) and a savage bolt head. It seems that the ejector from a savage would work. I measure the diameter of ejector and are the same. Length looks the same, did not remove to be exact.
I have pics just don't know how to load.

thanks bushhawg, I ordered a savage ejector and spring. I figured if I need to I might be able to modify it, we will see how it goes. it is suprising how parts for these guns are simply not available. there shouldn't be much to break on something like this. its so sad what happened to remington. the people who did it should be put in jail. The 783 is actually a decent gun IMO. I bought i because I think it has potential to tinker with. however it would have been nice not to have to tinker with a simple part like this.

if all else failed I can probably make and ejector using a drill bit and grinding it with a bench grinder. I have extra roll pins already on hand.

a savage 110 ejector arrived today and after some tinkering I got it working. the new ejector was still a little sticky in the bolt head. so I chucked it into a drill and put some flitz polish on a rag and polished the top and bottom of it. The savage ejector spring is too long. it appears the ejectors between the 783 and the savage are pretty much the same. the 110 might be slightly fatter. I don't have a ton of ejector force on the shells, but they do clear the action, which is actually plenty fine with me. I normally keep the brass and not having it pitched to oblivion is desirable. If I wanted some more ejection force I would most likely cut down the savage spring a couple coils.
