I have an old fly rod of my fathers that I was never allowed to fish with.He gave it too me a week ago.Sorry for the ignorance on my part but...It has a light green vinyl line on it with an inner cloth type of line.I dont see any mono inside though. How do I set up this kind of line.I live in the blue ridge mountains and I plan to fish a 30'river down the road.I've seen some rainbow in the 10-12" range.Any idea what type fly I need? Thanks,Dan

Check out the line first. If it's old it may be cracked and useless. Is there a name on the rod? Is there a line weight on the rod? How long is it? What's it made of? Your stream questions really depend on where you live and what type of aquatic insects dominate there. A little more info would likely get more answers. Sorry about all the question marks.

Thanks fellas.I'm hooked.I went this afternoon and bought a tapered line with a locking system.I managed to strip the line of vinyl 6"'s.I then ran cloth internal of line through cone(tied knot) and then fastened liter.I caught a 6" smallmouth and it was a blast. The reel is a garcia...something automatic 1430.The rod is a two piece "Herters"-7'-2".I think it's graphite. The main difference I saw in mine and modern ones at wal-mart was that It has no reel. All I could do when I caught the fish was hit the lever and draw up the slack. Then I hap- hazardly drew line in til I got him to the bank. Thanks for any help.By the way ...I lost 2 flys in brush, hooked my shirt while trying to cast and ...Thanks,Dan Oh' I'm fishing small rivers /creeks in the foothills of NC.

The term "tightloop" refers to keeping the line up over your head. You do that by keeping the foreward and backward rotation of the rod short... 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock is the term you might hear. Do not bring the rod back behind the 2 o'clock position nor drop it in front of 10...
It is much easier to write than to do for a new caster. Relax and let the line start loading the rod before you move it in the opposite direction and then give the line plenty of time to catch up.
The automatic reels were very popular at one time, but they lost their flavor after the new wore off them. But for what you are doing it will work just fine. art

Hang on to that old Herter's and maybe pick something else up. It would be nice for that piece of nostalgia to stay as nice as can be. If you are a newbie to flyfishing; then hang on to your hat. You may be in for a ride. It can be addictive.

Be careful that you don't snap the tip off with the automatic fly reel, BTDT.
