Hi all,

I feel that I lucked out and was able to buy a Left Hand Ruger 10/22 Competition, one of 500. I also bought 6 magazines since they are left handed too.

What high quality scope would you put on it for varmints/small predators and small game (crows, fox, jackrabbits, cottontails, squirrels, packrats and prairie dogs)? I plan on keeping shots under 100 yards. I prefer to buy once, cry once and have had bad luck with scopes under $250, especially in bad weather.

Also, wow, no ammo at the local FFL. Told me I'd have to drive to a big city or order online. What good websites can I find some copper or lead free rimfire ammo? It's a requirement in my area. Feel free to PM me.

Thank you!

I have a VX5 Leupold with CDS on my deer rifle. Absolutely love it. On my Tikka T1X 22 LR, I have a Leupold VX3 with the Varmint hunter reticle. I like it a lot, but the BDC lines aren’t much help for a 22 rifle. For what I would consider to be the perfect 22 scope, I’d combine the fine crosshair of the Varmint Hunter reticle with the CDS on the VX5. So, a VX3 4.5-14 with CDS. Get the custom CDS dial from Leupold for your chosen ammo, dial the distance and make the shot. What I don’t know is whether or not you can get a scope like that. I’d like one.

Give the guys at Camera Land New York a call and tell them what you're looking for. I recently bought an Athalon from them I am quite impressed with. He also has some Sightrons on sale.
2-7 Nikons were my favorite when I could get them.

Canadianlefty: I am so happy you came across that left handed rig - I did NOT know the rotary magazines were also left handed versions.
Enjoy that Rifle.
My favorite scope for the uses you list is found now, sadly, only on the used scope market.
I have several of the wonderful Weaver V-16's in both fine cross hair and dot reticle version and the Du-Plex reticle versions.
The power range is perfect (4 power to 16 power) and the adjustable objective works wonderfully.
I have bought these in the past on the used market for as little as $125.00 and as much as $225.00.
I still actively seek them out.
Best of luck to you with whichever you choose.

I’ve had all kinds of scopes on my RH version. Right now it’s wearing a little Bushnell prism sight for plinking, but I have a spare Tract 3-15 already sitting in rings that will go on it at some point when I have time. One of the ones that worked very well, despite the fixed 100yard parallax, was a Trijicon Accupoint 3-9 with the duplex and green dot. Light, tough, and illuminated. The center section is plenty fine enough to quarter a 1” target dot or square at 100 yards and the thick side posts come close enough to the center to be useful. I had no trouble getting good groups at 50, despite the focus setting.

Lead-free ammo? Good luck with that. I’ve seen zero on this side. Mine likes Eley Club and SK RM and FN pretty well. Keep that chamber clean and install a buffered stop pin.

I have two Tikkas with Meopta Optika 6 4.5x27x50 on them, the glass and clicks are as good as it better than the Leupold VX3-3i scopes.
I paid 550.00 each for them.

They are heavy but great glass.
