Hello, I was looking to get some information from the Savage collectors/experts on a Savage 99C Series A .22-250 Rem. The serial number dates it to 1978. Overall the rifle is in good condition with what I would call "honest wear" the rear sight is missing, which isn't a big deal as I will be mounting a scope on it for upcoming coyote season. How rare of a caliber is this? There is currently one for sale on Gun Broker for $3495. Thanks

If I wanted a 99C in 22-250 to hunt coyotes I'd buy a 308 for a few hundred dollars and have it rebarreled before I'd pay crazy money for a collector. A few years ago there were leftover Savage 22-250 barrels floating around and a few guys rebarreled guns, myself included, although I used a 99DL from the early 1960's as a donor.

It's really not that rare and 3495 is crazy money IMO. I would say the 22-250 is more common that the 7mm-08.

If you want to hunt coyotes you could buy 4 nice 22-250's that would kill them just as dead, just as fast.

I have never seen a 99C 22-250 in the flesh but unless you have lots of money you can find a Browning BLR in 22-250 for a lot less. Or simply a used bolt action

You know what they say, you can always come down, but you can't go up. That guy is going to need a 'chute when when he comes down or there will be a big splat.

The 22HP with 55gr Buffalo Arms bullets make a dandy coyote rifle.

A 300 Sav with cast bullets earned me enough fur money to buy a 22 Hornet, Model 23.

99Cs in 22-250 are probably the second least common behind those in 7mm-08.

They probably didn't sell well because most people who shoot varmints with a 22-250 want a more accurate rifle with a better trigger.

If you want a 99 in 22-250 to shoot, I think that you would do better to have a higher quality after-market barrel with a 1-8" ROT installed on a 99 donor action.

If you want a 99 in 22-250 for a collection, condition means everything and good condition with honest wear sounds more like a shooter to me.

Beware of 99s in 22-250 with unnarked barrels as they are almost certainly parts guns put together with GPC barrels, same/same for 99s in 7mm-08 and 375 that have unmarket barrels. The barrels are fine, I have a 99E with a GPC 22-250 barrel, but you never know how well a parts gun has been 'smithed.

Jeff, who is GPC? That must be what mine is since it's unmarked. I've had a few 375 barrels as well, all new, but all marked as factory barrels. Still have one.

Yes, GPC = Gun Parts Corp

I seem to buy most of my retail parts from GPC or Jack First, sometimes CDNN when they are closing out the parts, and sometimes guns, that are left after a company, like USRA and Marlin, has been closed down.

The unmarked GPC 99 barrels that I've had and seen have all had dovetails cut for the rear sight, the barrel stud for attaching the forearm, and hole(s) d&t for a ramp front sight. I have never seen a new, verses recycled, after-market barrel on a 99 that was milled or d&t for open sights.

I have a 7mm08 barrel for a postmil 99, was told it was a "factory barrel" but the lack of a barrel address had me convinced it almost certainly wasn't factory. Price was right either way, so I'm good. Nice to know where it came from.

So if you remove the for end there should be a line and a letter code at the breech these were factory barrels bought at bankruptcy by numrich form savage so they are factory barrels not installed by the factory so not addressed.

I'm sure it was a factory barrel, but it most likely didn't come from the Savage Arms factory. grin
