Not a monster by any means, but he’s excited. Anytime we can get him away from the books it’s a win….Skipped school and everything today.
4am wake up call. 90 mile drive to his great grandparents 80 acres that my parents now have. In the stand at 6:15 for 6:45 legal time. Busted as we were walking in by something. 5 minutes until legal time could hear one 50 yards in the brush but never showed himself. Sunup brought herds of squirrels rustling every leaf on the property.
Early rise caught up with him and the nap started at shooting time. 15 minutes later I hear some movement but never see it, wake him up to get ready.
10 minutes later he spots one through the brush before I do. Slowly walking the trail we came in on. A few more yards and it’s a wide open shot. Of course the deer cuts the corner and walks through the timber. I could have picked a spot a dozen times to shoot him, but a 10 year old that’s only shot a doe previously is a different story. Watch the deer through the brush move on down the trail towards the pond and more scrapes.
Boys disappointed. But it’s good for him. And good for not forcing a brushy shot.
30 minutes later I hear some leaves rustling and it’s his buck returning down the trail. Headed right for the opening he scooted around earlier.
Whistle at him to stop. His $200 700 ADL .243 cracked and deer runs. I could tell he was hit. But not sure how good. Through the timber i could see him. Stopped. I throw out a prayer shot but it wasn’t needed. Buck was going down. Inspection showed he didn’t have any lungs left.
After the shot. Dead deer about 70 yards from the stand.
