Does anyone on the Kenai or in AK cut shotgun barrels and thread them for choke tubes?

I doubt it but I'd contact Vince Baldoff in Anchorage.

Probably have to send to Briley Choke tubes or some such.

I do not believe Vince does any choke tube installing. He used to have another (now dead) local "smith" do them.

I have had a large number of them done by several different smiths. Mike Orlen did a bunch but the last go around was horrible.

I just cut mine with a hacksaw, and smooth them off with a chainsaw file. Use cold bluing on the exposed metal.

Result?: Cylinder bore. Just right for a shotgun with a shorter barrel. My reason for doing this is cottontails and snowshoe rabbits in tight cover, but see no reason why it wouldn't work for home defense too.

Your question is about an Alaska gunsmith, but I have used a guy on AR15.com by the name of GunCat to cut a Saiga and an 11-87 then threaded both for choke tubes. I am very happy with his work and it was very reasonable. The turn around time was also very reasonable.

I used a hacksaw and this on my 870 turkey gun project. Worked great, squared the shoulder on my less-then-perfect cut. Might be an option if you're interested in DIY. Good luck.

Send to Mike Orlen in Massachusetts. Done right, quick turn around time.

Had many done by him... after the last batch I will never send him another... took forever and the work sucked.

Huh. I sent him a barrel this summer, with the customary written order and check tucked inside the box. Got it back two weeks later and it was done perfectly. No muss no fuss and exactly as requested.

I sent him barrels more than a few times, usually a dozen or so at a time. Several groups were done, quickly and well. Then there was a batch with two issues (two barrels) which he said he would fix. They were returned with another batch. It took months for them to be returned. One barrel was an Ithaca Mag10... when returned the tube was extremely difficult to remove with grit and dirty fluids all over it. He was to make a second tube for it... The threads are nothing like the other and cannot be used. One of the repaired tubes was to be trimmed, deepened, and cleaned up (the threads shot out the first time it was shot). I had to have a competent company fix it. They were not impressed. I could go on...

Like I said, he did quite a bit of good work and then he did not. After speaking to him by phone at the time I developed a lot of questions...

They are probably the best... not every project needs to meet their (expensive) standards.

Briley lost my shotgun for a month, in their shop.....acted like they were put out, having to look for it. Expensive, slow, and (the guy I dealt with) a prick.

Carlson's is, by far, superior. Last barrel I had done, an month ago.....from Idaho to Kansas, barrel threaded, and back to Idaho......7 total days. Quality work. 1 or 2 day turnaround, and a wide selection of tubes. Great Company!

Any questions, give them a call.
