My partner and I shot 2 elk the other day. Yesterday I knocked the ivories out of them and had them on a sawhorse in the driveway where were working on them. I was gone for a while and came back to find magpies all over the scrap pile...and all 4 of the ivories were gone. The cussed magpies had carried them off. I read that a good pair of ivories can sell for up to $40 so those @#$%^ birds stole $80 from us.

Can't even recall how many pairs of reading glasses they've ripped me off for.
One morning they took two at once and a hour later got me for a third.

They are. In Idaho you need both a state and a federal permit to shoot them. The rule of SSS usually prevails.
They call them migratory to get them under federal rules but I've never seen them leave. They're here year round. Years ago, when they 1st started protecting crows, magpies were listed along with crows but those can be hunted. I don't know when they separated them.

I never saw a magpie the 2 years I lived in Idaho , saw a lot of starlings you're allowed to shoot them . Owyhee Desert area had quite a few starlings .
22-250 Mickey Coleman built for me really did the trick

Rock Chuck , birds just don't like you , they build nest in your vehicles & now steal $80 , that's not right smile

A city living hunting buddy one bagged a nice heavy 3 by 3 mulie, arrived home quite late, and placed the skull near his rig in a flower garden. Neighborhood dog/s packed it off never to be recovered. It was his finest to date, and he's still pissed.

My lab brought home a pretty nice 4 point bleached out mulie head, talked to all the neighbors, nobody was missing anything.

I was told a 22-250 slug running at 3800 fps makes them go ‘poof’ in a rather dramatic fashion.

they're federally protected but some states have seasons. Idaho does, Montana doesn't. During Idaho's 4 month season, there's no limit and no weapon restrictions. Have at 'em. I'm SURE that you in MT wouldn't ever think of shooting an illegal crow, now would you? laugh

"The Warden"s grandad used to sit in the yard, see a magpie light at the dog bowl, and tell his wife - "Jessie, bring me my four hunnert an ten!" smile smile smile
He was pretty deadly with that thing.

They're everywhere south of I 90. When I chukar, hun, sharpttail, sage grouse hunt I just might accidentally hit some shooting at other birds. They really cause a lot of damage

They take a lot of eggs from other nests.
