I began this deer season with 3 goals in mind. Get my oldest son on his first buck, get my daughter on her first deer and kill one with a handgun. All 3 have been accomplished successfully! It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions and we have made memories that will last a lifetime. I love spending time with my kids in the outdoors. When they aren’t with me it just isn’t as fun anymore. I cherish every hunt with them as I know one day things will be different.

I’ll start off with my daughters first deer.

I honestly never thought this day would come. My daughter lost interest in hunting 4 years ago. She’s had no desire to go. I never pushed the issue but would ask her if she wanted to go hunting with me periodically. This past summer when we were shooting at the range she told me she wanted to shoot a deer. I was like ok. We’ve been on several hunts this season but it just hadn’t come together like it did on November 28th. She made a perfect 75 yard shot and the doe went 15 yards before piling up. She got to share the moment with her brothers as well. A day I’ll never forget.

My oldest sons first buck

Words can’t express how proud and excited I am of my son. After 3 seasons he finally got his first buck. He has put a lot of time in the stand and work in helping me prepare stands in the past 3 seasons. I told him in the beginning I don’t do handouts. He would have to work for it and earn it. He’s had his ups and downs over the past 3 seasons. He’s let a bunch of smaller bucks walk and some nice ones slip by. Even had a couple of misses as well. As most of you know when it comes to deer hunting and kids if it can go wrong it will. 😂 The stars finally aligned on November 14th. The buck stepped out into the powerline and started feeding around 4:30. He was close to 200 yards when he stepped out and too far for him. He fed towards us slowly for about 10 minutes then began to walk back into the woods. As he got to the woodline I grunted at him with my mouth. He stopped and stood there for about 30 seconds looking then began to walk right up the powerline towards us. He closed the distance quick and once he turned broadside my son made the 94 yard shot and dropped him in his tracks. After the shot my son was shaking like a leaf. He is very proud and he’s ready for buck #2. He’s also killed 2 does this season. The rifle he is using was actually bought from a member on here.

My first deer with a handgun and my first kill since I started loading my own ammo. Ruger Super Redhawk 44 mag with a VX3 2.5-8 scope. I loaded up some 225 gr. Barnes XPB’s which I bought from a member on here along with the Norma brass which I bought from another member here. The bullet performed excellent. 25 yard shot and she went 20 yards and piled up.

I agree 100% with hunting not being the same without kids.
Congrats to all and keep them in the woods
