If bullets are grouped as follows : Varmint, target, hunting (Sierra uses this terminology ) What would the Nosler ballistic tip bullet be classed as ?

Depends on caliber and weight. Some are considered "hunting" bullets and some are intended for varmints. In 6mm diameter, for example, the 55-grain would be a varmint bullet and the 95-grain is a hunting bullet.

Depends on the weight of the Ballistic Tip. Their lighter BTs are classified as varmint bullets.

Nosler actually classifies them as varmint or hunting also.

I am mainly interested in 22 & 6 mm. Does Hornady class any 22 cal as a hunting bullet ?

Hornady does not recommend any of their 224 bullets for deer or larger. Varmints and targets only.

Depends on if you're hunting varmints or not!
The bigger BT's are good for deer hunting the smaller ones are good if hunting coyotes...............

If you slow down Ballistic tips to an MV below 2700 fps, they are not so explosive and will open up quite nicely for deer or coyote, or anything else that size you care to hunt.

Yes, the VMax is a varmint bullet. That’s the V in VMax.

Yes it is, they do explode well on paper if you can get them to stabilize. Ooooops you were talking 55 not 53.
