...30 round aftermarket mags...does this seem realistic or maybe just overkill?
It's the same answer to so many questions in life: It depends.
1. Can you accommodate the added length?
2. Can you accommodate the increased weight?
3. Will the magazine feed when full? When half full? When almost empty?
4. Does the slide lock back after the last shot?
5. Can you draw the gun well with it?
6. Can you shoot as quickly? As accurately?
7. Do the mags drop free smoothly?
8. When considering all of these issues, ask yourself if the limitations/inconveniences are worth it to you to have the extra 13 rounds already on board, as opposed to an extra mag in a pouch/pocket.
Personally, I can't feature any possible way for a private citizen to functionally/comfortably carry a 9mm pistol with a 30 round magazine. I used to carry a G19 with a standard magazine but my spares were 21 rounders. The added length in a mag pouch didn't make any real difference. I never carried the gun with a 21 round mag in it, though.
There are a few guys here who have significant "been there, done that" who can offer some other considerations, but that's my two cents. I'm sure I'll get change back.
Carry on!
