I don't think we have any Newfies as members, but here's something that was a lot of fun at Christmas. It's a mummer's parade. A lot of communities do this on the Rock over the holidays. And elsewhere too!

Mummering has a long history in Newfoundland. It wasn't seen too much for a few years, but came back strong about forty years ago.

During Christmas, people dressed up in silly clothes and covered faces would visit people's homes and entertain the residents with dancing and music. After the residents guess everyone's identities, the mummers would be rewarded with treats, alcoholic beverages, and Purity Syrup. Purity is a Newfoundland company that makes cookies, sweet syrups and other things. It makes a good mix should you imbibe.

The parade starts at minute 2. Singing and dancing at about minute 10, welcoming the mummers with music.

You can read more about mummering here. https://holidappy.com/holidays/Mummering-in-Newfoundland-A-Christmas-Tradition

Nobody ever said the Newfies didn't know how to have fun. They are some of the most musical people I've ever experienced.

Saw the word “mummer” and had to peek. Doubt that many on this side of the line know what it means. I didn’t until I read Grahame.

This is what revitalized it back in the 80s. It didn't completely die off though. Lots of places still did it, but this song, played on a television special, brought it back. And naturally, this video was shot in a kitchen, which many from the east will understand to be a kitchen party. smile
