Just got back from a cow hunt with Fishtail Ranch in Chama NM. Great lodge and outfit. Filled my tag on the afternoon of the first day. There were 13 cow hunters at the lodge this week and when I left Wednesday morning 10 had punched their tags.
I used Plain Jane a M700 30-06 with Leupold 2.5-8 and 150TTSX.

Congrats!
That's about as plain as my Ruger American 30-06. I do have a 4-12 Leupold on it, though. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be. It came in handy last year when I had to find a hole through a sagebrush to shoot my elk. I usually carry it set on 6x.

good looking cow----lots of good eating. That's my hunting setup as well. Except I use factory Super X -- 180 grain power points.

Congrats on your elk. I was hunting at the lodge at chama a couple weeks ago and my guide, who I've hunted with probably 10 times, uses a sporterized 30-06 Enfield and 180gr corelokts. No telling how many elk he's taken. Enjoy the fine table fare.

Good deal!

I'm curious how the 150 TTSX performed. I loaded that bullet in my 308 for just such a purpose. Muzzle velocity? Distance?

Congrats on the cow. Hundred years later 30-06 still getting it done.

The shot was about 125-150 yards. It's a load of 50 grains of H4895 that I haven't bothered to chronograph. From the Barnes data it should yield about 2900fps MV.
The cow was slightly angling away and I shot her a bit farther back than I would have liked because she was beginning to move as the shot broke.
The bullet entered mid ribs, took out part of the liver, put a large hole in the diaphragm and exited just behind the off shoulder. She ran about 30 yards in a semicircle leaving a lot of blood on the snow and expired. If hunting bulls the 165's at max velocity might be a better choice but I've used the 150's on a lot of deer and have great confidence in that load. As you can see, it is accurate.

That is a Brown Precision. The rifle was built by Ken Gennecco of Stockton Ca for me in 1985 when there weren't a lot of options for lightweight hunting rifles. It weighed 7lbs 2oz with sling and 2-7 Leupold Compact when it was built. With the 2.5-8 and several coats of paint it has, like me, put on a few oz since then.
