I am trying to figure out how to scope a C in 243 for my young grandsons to use for deer and antelope.

I'd like to keep it light and and close to the barrel and I have a Leupold 2 1/2X 8 36 for it.
My EG has a one piece Redfield base and rings with a Redfield 4X but if I tried to put the Leupold on it the back of the scope would be 1+ forward.

So does anyone make a one piece base/ring like Talley that would mount directly with out using a base? They don't.
If I have to use a base I'd like to use one that's thin and rings that keep the scope back far enough and low but still allow room to reach the safety.
What do you suggest?

I think Leupold makes a two piece set that has the front mount (or ring) offset to the rear so you can move the bell back further and get the scope closer to your eye. I am pretty sure it's the ring. You can't go wrong with a Leupold 2 1/2 X 8 36. It's my favorite scope.

EGW makes a rail for the 99’s. They have them on ebay.

You can use offset rings to position the scope somewhere other than straight over the bases.

I know you're talking one piece but I prefer 2 piece Weavers. I've got a Leupold 2-7 on a Brush Gun in Weavers. Spacing is a bit tight on that but it works. I just checked, the 2.5-8 that I have appears be a bit longer tubed than the 2-7.

I like the 1-piece Tasco BM-99, but will use the later alloy #841. The BM-99 is polished blued steel, while the #841 is a matte finished alloy. They both work, but the BM-99 looks nicer.

My conclusion also, I have 841's on all of my 99's that wear a scope now. I also put them on all of my Mauser hunting rifles that are scoped including the 375. I glass bed them to each specific rifle and have zero issues. The one-piece mounting setup is much better than the usual weaver 2 piece setup

They are super-low, lightweight, and have a low enough profile that you hardly notice them For me, the scope ring placement is perfect. A big plus is it uses Weaver-style rings.

I found and ordered a set of Weaver bases and I have a Redfield 1 3/4 X 5 straight tube that I can mount and at least see how well the rifle shoots. This is my first time working with a newer clip fed 99 and it certainly is not as smooth feeding as the rotary magazines.
I started hunting in the mid 1950's with my grandfather's1899 in 32-40 and currently have a 1948 EG in 300 that doesn't get hunted as much as it should.

I have the same rifle I call "Silver Belly". Most of the blue is gone from being carried while hunting but, it's still a good working rifle. I've often wondered about the hunts it has been on.

I’m not saying you are wrong..but why is the one-piece base “much better” than the “usual Weaver 2 piece setup”? I’m new to the Savage 99 and I ended up putting a Leupold 1 1/2-5x scope in Weaver 2 piece bases with Weaver rings.
Most one-piece bases I’m familiar with attach to the receiver with only 3 screws, instead of 4 with the two-piece, intuitively making it a less secure mount. I think aesthetically it is less desirable also; at least to my eyes.
I have noticed the one-piece base seems popular among 99 owners.

I like the Tasco BM-99 one-piece base because it is polished blued steel. AFAIK these are the only polished blued steel bases made for the Savage 99 if you want to use Weaver-style rings. There is nothing wrong with the Weaver two-piece bases, but I prefer the aesthetics of a polished blued steel base on a polished blued steel rifle.

I put blue Loctite on my base screws so that they don't come loose regardless of whether the bases on my rifles are attached with three screws or four.

Ok, I understand aesthetics as a motivator, as it’s is one of the reasons I like the two-piece base. Actually, aesthetics is important to me. And, yes, I use blue loctite on all base and ring screws. For me, and depending on the mass of the scope you are using of course, the 358 Win with 30/06 level recoil, is where I would opt for a four-screw base. Just my opinion based on my experience.

I don't own a 99 in 358 WIN anymore, but when I did they had Redfield turn-in one-piece bases installed and they seemed to work just fine despite being attached with only three screws.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that the Tasco BM-99 one-piece base is functionally superior to the two-piece Weaver bases. I've used Weaver bases on dozens of factory d&t Savage 99s and think that they are fully functional bases, I've just come to prefer the aesthetics of the blued steel BM-99s when I want to use Weaver-style rings.

If the 99 is factory drilled, then I am a 1 piece guy because of looks and function. I like to carry once in awhile using the scope as a suitcase handle, to save the bluing on the bottom of the receiver. I also just like the look better with the two-piece tasco mounts. All that said, if its not factory drilled, the Lightfoot mount or a Stith is the way to go.
