I was wondering what was the basic gear you need besides a saddle, saddle bags, and a lace for your gun. to hunt on horse or mules?

Hobbles, and a good rope and fixins to tie a high line. As a minimun a set of Colrado bags that fit over your riding saddle to pack meat in. A good military style heavy pauncho, scabbord, small cantle bag to keep pauncho and such in. ( this is much better than tying them on.) A horn bag is nice to keep munchies, water and small binos in. A small back pack stove to keep in saddle bags. Horse first aid kit besides a human one. It's kinda of like yur hunting gear. There are a lot of extra little things that help out. You just need to see what works for you. Where I hunt in Coloardo, I never leave camp without the means to stay out over niht if I have to.

And somewhere in that gear stick in a hoof pick. Don't leave home without one especially if you are riding on rocks.

I keep a horsemans knife in my saddle bag that has a pick in it. I also keep a few nails stuck in my hatband, should a shoe come lose. With a leatherman, you can usually work one or two lose nails out and stick a few new ones in. Then block them with a rock or another hatchet . We all carry small hatchets in our bags, so there are usually two available. It's not a perfect job, but can gtet you back to camp where you can reset the shoe, and possibly not tear the hoof up as can happen when a lose shoe tears off.
Anybody who uses stock in the back country needs to know how to at least nail a shoe on. Riding mules, I'm luckier than most as most of mine go barefoot, unless I need traction on rocks or ice.

Good report! I would add a locking carabiner to tie the horse to on the overhead rope. It will allow them to move w/o burning through your lead, if you choose to go that route. Chaps are a must (I don't remember if you posted that SS).
