Among my modest collection of firearms the family will discover when I gone are three rifles of the same caliber; a Ruger 1 and two pre-64 Winchesters, they are all 270’s.
It will be noted by the more observant of the clan that they all have been used but well maintained. Further observation will reveal that they resided in the back of the safe, probably not used recently.
It’s owner seems to have moved on to other rifles and calibers such as the 25-06, 257 Roberts. 250 Savage, 7x57, 280, 284, 30-06 the 300 H&H and the 6.5 Creedmoor.
Someone may note in looking through my photo albums that the three 270’s were pictured with more critters than any other caliber.
When they start rooting through my ammo and component stash, more evidence of much usage of the 270 cartridge will become apparent.
Finally, if a get together is arranged after my departure; my hunting pals will probably not remember what I hunted with in my later years but will remember me and a Ruger 1 or a pre-64 Winchester.

There's nothing wrong with those 3 rifles. I love my pre 64's as well, but I've hunted my sporter m1917's much more. More recently it's been my Tikka's. It's all good...

I’ve shot big game with probably two dozen different calibers. Yet when I hunt my one and only .270 I often wonder why I’ve used so many others.

I love mine too, but the last 3 have been Tikka's. My favorite, the 270

Cool post.

I have my favorites also, the practical side of me sometimes wonders why I have so many toys to play with. Then the looney kicks in and bring me back to my senses, or back into the abyss? crazy

I understand.

There are times that I wonder why I’ve put myself through the things I have, fretting over many different rifles. The practical side of me understands that I could’ve done everything that I do hunting-wise with about 2-3 different ones. Sitting smack dab in the throes of middle age, I find myself gravitating back to the rifles I admired so much as a kid, and I’m sure they’ll be only the ones that I have left when I’m done.

Sounds like me and my wives and girlfriends!

As my days afield dwindle (hey, I'm not dead yet - I'm simply slowly losing my youthful passion for hunting), I find myself letting go of more and more hunting rifles and replacing them with target guns. But, the core group of "0ld Reliables" will remain to be dealt with by my successors. Who'll get what? That's mapped out, but in the end I'll be dead and beyond caring.

Always fun to experiment with new or untried rifles/calibers but there is a lot to be said for those "no drama" combinations that always seem to bring home the venison.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

My oldest brother had a pretty good collection of guns. He had in his will that his three kids would draw straws. The one with the shortest straw would get first pick, the second shortest would get second pick then the third would get his/her pick. Then the rotation continued, 1st, 2nd, 3rd until all the guns were gone. I think that I'll do that.

Like 270’s, have a couple of Sakos. They kill as well as 7 mags, 300 mags.

I also have a special place for my .270 Sako Finnebear. I bought it new at a Mom and Pop shop here in N Central IN. I could have stopped buying big game rifles right then. That is one of the few rifles I can take out of the stock and will be on zero when I put it back. It does have some travel miles on it but I have moved on to some other rifle. Darned if I can explain why.
Have a great day.

My first “big rifle” was a Model 700 in .270. I have a number of other rifles and calibers but it’s still the rifle I pull out of the safe when I want to kill something.

I've no offspring with any penchant for rifles, so my estate sale is going to be epic.
If either of my two adult daughters subsequently align themselves with an outdoorsman (which, at this point, seems unlikely) he will be the luckiest SOB there ever was.
There's a pre-64 .270 that drives nails in that mix, along with three custom Mauser .270s.
So few hunting seasons remaining...
